Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
I call this the Mid-Winter Flickr which is probably optimistic since Winter only started a few weeks ago. Maybe we'll have an early thaw.
Well my vacation has unfortunately come to an end, last week was a short week in that I worked Wed-Friday but it felt anything but short. There is a lot to be said for staying home and reading but economics don’t allow for that at the moment. I’ve been fighting off a cold for the last two weeks. It hasn’t been the traditional cold, no wheezing or blowing but my head is congested and I’m tired and I have a cough which just won’t go away. I’ve been going between taking the cough syrup, which is vile, and not taking it but the cough is tenacious. Woke me up last night. I had an odd sleep occurrence on Tuesday, my last day of vacation. I got up around 6:30 AM and puttered around and had my coffee. Then I sat in the chair to read. Around 9:30AM I closed my eyes for a moment and when I next opened them I appeared to have lost 3 hours, it was 12:30 PM. I was quite surprised. I took my temperature and it was 98.6 so I don’t appear to have a virus, just a cold. We really need a cure for the common cold.
The really cold weather we’ve been experiencing here in the Northeast certainly doesn’t help. One morning it was 17 degrees on the Meadowlands clock as I headed into New York City. I’m still living with my rubber band procedure for the hemorrhoids but I was gratified that my biopsy was negative. Certainly fits my frame of mind.
Went into the City this morning and walked up to the Metropolitan Museum to revisit my friend Matisse before he sets sail for distant shores. Just as enjoyable a time as the first visit.
Other than that not really much going on. It’s 2013 and I still have a hard time believing we are in the 21st Century, still seems like science fiction to me. But where are the transporters, I would really like one of those for the morning commute.
Anyway it’s good to know that Betty is here for us and we have a new home for a few years.

Andy,
The photo of Christina and Phil is just one of many photos which can be found at http://sincerelyhana.com/projects/switcheroo/ . This seems to be an ongoing project for Hana. Each picture is taken in a different setting, and usually in public settings. She also has more pictures at her tumblr blog which can be linked to at the top of the page.

Thanks. Remarkable how many people were convinced to take part. We've discussed how crossdressing has become more mainstream and this certainly is more evidence of it.
-
Pluse, a lot of people are thinking about how women can wear men's clothes and many are thinking that men should wear women's clothes. Seriously, who said a skirt is a female peice of clothing?

Posted in another forum (SkirtCafe):
Yes indeed pants had not been invented and those that wrote the scriptures were trying to
suitably dispose of the former 'Fig Leafs' in an environmental way and loin cloths seemed to
be in vogue covering more of the subject matter.
And now we are in the season where we don our "Gay Apparel" so don't get me started on
that issue !
We come into this world with nothing and leave in one form or another as dust - in the mean
time we have all the previous tenants to thank for crossing words and misinterpreting the
written word.
If ONLY Adam & Eve had not screwed up in the Garden of Eden we would not be having this
discussion/issue (or this forum).
So as Jay Leno says frequently " WHERE ARE THE PARENTS" ?
So enjoy your holiday season no matter what suits your fancy !

REPLY:
Clothing was unisex to start with and only when man needed a comfortable way to ride a horse;
donkey or other beast of burden did pants come into vogue.
Skirts (robes) came into play after the fig leafs and loin clothes.
Only in the recent mid-early 1900's did women venture forth in man's clothing routinely.
So what is wrong with man wearing what was originally universal clothing apparel beit skirts;
robes; dresses or whatever was the garmet of choice ?
Some folk of the anti-mens skirt movement quote passages out of the bible about either sex wearing
garmets of the other - bunch of BS ! - A gross misinterpretation of what was written centuries
ago with no parables or miracles (stories) to relate to how this was wrong !
I wear skirts skorts and kilts with abandon and take care that everything is passing legal muster.
No unwanted exposure of body parts that are so presumed to be offensive yet were made in the
image and likeness of the Creator !
Enough of my first ranting soap box post - - -
Have a nice rest of the new year - - -
Betty - take care and don't loose all those precious stories !
One piece of critique the RED border is a bit harsh could you tone it down into something light-pastel ?

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Well, I appear to be relatively healthy, my cough is gone and I don’t have the congested feeling in my head, and my nether regions seem to be healing nicely so I will consider myself lucky that I have so far successfully avoided the flu which has befallen so many of us. I get the flu shot early every year, usually in October which this year seems especially foresighted. Like everyone else I hate being sick. Denis Hamill, a columnist for the Daily News, wrote a column last week that he titled, Sick of Being Sick which I think we can all go along with. Currently I’m just sick of the Winter although today was a little more temperate and tomorrow the forecast is for positively Spring like weather. Let’s hope.
Very little going on otherwise, visited my ancient Aunt and read to her from Patti Page’s obituary. When I was younger I was not a fan, as at the time I considered this to be music of my parent’s generation and as such, nothing for me to pay attention to. But as I’ve aged I’ve discovered that music from all generations has it’s good points and I can enjoy it as much as I enjoy the music I grew up with. I listen to old radio programs off the web while at work and sometimes I’ll play old music clips off YouTube. YouTube is dangerous in that it is much akin to eating peanuts, you watch or listen to a video which leads you to another and pretty soon you’ve lost a substantial portion of the day. I try my best to avoid that. The other day I was listening to my Mills Brothers channel on Pandora which, much to my disappointment, had a dearth of Mills Brothers songs it but it did have wonderful pop music. I heard the Andrews Sisters and then found myself listening to a 15 minute medley of their hits. Afterwards, as it was on the same page, I played a 8 minute excerpt from an old movie that featured the big band leader Tex Beneke. The clip I saw had him, the band, and a group of backup singers, singing I Got a Gal in Kalamazoo, which is currently a favorite of mine. That was wonderful but when it ended, the lights dimmed and the spotlight hit the curtain and out came the Nicholas Brothers, two Black tap dancers. They started as children and in this clip they must be in their early 20’s. They were phenomenal dancers, moving as if their bodies had no bones. I had to bring over my young colleague to watch and at one point I said to her, do you think Michael Jackson watched these guys? You could see lots of Michael’s moves, the splits, flips and moonwalking but to my mind these guys were so much better. At one point they leapt onto a platform, probably five feet from the floor and did a split. I commented to my coworker that while the split was sensational, it was even more sensational that they bounced right up from it. Without using their hands. At the end of the routine one of them danced up a wall and did a back flip! They lived to ripe old ages and danced pretty much up till the end.
Give yourself a treat and spend 7 minutes 43 seconds with Tex Beneke, The Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Nicholas Brothers.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Well, like much of the USA I find myself under the weather again. Last week I thought I was healthy again after fighting with the cold for a while but then it came back, worse than before. I started feeling it on Monday and by Wednesday I was into full bore wheezing and blowing. Very unappealing. I wound up working from home on Thursday and Friday and still don’t feel that great today. The wheezing and blowing appears to have ended but I'm congested and very tired. I don’t have the flu, I took my temperature and it was normal. Unlike the rest of me I guess. I got about 9 1/2 hours of sleep last night and it wasn't too restless but I certainly didn't wake up refreshed. I thought I might go to the museum this morning. I went into the city to do an errand in my office but having done that I realized I wasn't really up to the museum trip so I just stopped to buy coffee beans and came back home. When I arrived home I had my coffee and read the paper and closed my eyes in the chair and slept for about 90 minutes. Don't know if it is the current strain of the cold or my age but I'm very weary. I just went out to the store to get something I forgot this morning and I'm ready for another nap. My Company is closed on Monday so I have the three day weekend and I’m hoping I have a little more energy on Tuesday.
Well, I’ll send Florence Nightingale on her way and yield the floor to our guests.

The only way you're gonna shake off the flu is to stay home, stay warm, & stay in bed as much as possible. Otherwise it can last weeks, possibly put you in a hospital, & make you feel weak long after it's gone.
Get well soon.

I'm convinced that if I just didn't go to bed and stay there that I still would feel like hell.
I tried carrying on like everything was fine, except I didn't feel good and I just kept getting worse.
If you can get the flu shot and after about 2 days things start to get better, I got to the point that I couldn't keep my eyes open even while driving, this was on my way back from getting the flu shot, the first ever in my life flu shot I might add.
A week later I'm almost back to normal, food is starting to taste normal again and I don't feel as frozen as I did for those 2 weeks.
I honestly thought I was going to die, this flu stuff is nothing to mess with like it was when we were younger.
I know I will be getting flu shots as soon as they come out in the fall from now on.
-
I got the flu about 8 or 9 years ago and it almost killed me. Missed a lot of work. Was so weak that the only way for me to get out of bed was to roll over and fall out. I decided that from then on I would get a flu shot every year. I also get a pneumonia shot whenever I am due for one. Did a lot of thinking at that time about what would happen if I died and all my 'girl' stuff was found.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Well I made the mistake two weeks ago of announcing that I was healthy and then had a major relapse so I think I will just say that I don’t currently have any overt signs of illness. I had Monday off so this was a short week but as often happens it was a short week that felt very long indeed. This may have something to do with the fact that the temperature every morning as I left the house was in single digits and didn’t get much above that during the day. This culminated in a minor snow storm last night. I imagine that Betty will tell me I’m a sissy for complaining about this as I’m sure the weather in Buffalo was even more extreme. I am looking forward to the Spring thaw with great anticipation.
Aside from complaining about the weather I don’t have a lot to say this week. Visited my ancient Aunt and read from the New York Daily News of October 1, 1954, the Giants were very close to beating the Cleveland Indians for the World Series. It was an era when newspapers had enormous circulations, the News daily circulation was over 2 million and the Sunday circulation was 3.6 million. The current circulation for the Daily and Sunday News is about half a million. I contribute to this by reading 5 newspapers daily and Sunday. I will not be happy if the newspapers go digital totally and eliminate the print edition. I hope it never comes to pass.
Well, a less verbose Flickr this week. Enjoy it while you can.

This winter & last winter have been rather mild with not much snow, & temperatures around the 30s to 50s F (-1C to 15C) most days... up until last week when we also had lows in the single digits too (-17C to -13C, there goes my heating bill). It takes a half an hour to layer on enough clothing to go out in that kind of cold. Including my heavy coat, I probably wore around 40lbs of clothes to go out there.
Today the warming begins again though, with a high of 28F (=2C) expected. Then we get 3 days of 40s & 50s F. But by Friday they're talking it'll get down to the 20s F again. Those pictures on the national news of snow in Buffalo are actually pictures of suburbs south of the city & some of Niagara Falls. There's very little snow on the ground in the city. After dealing with single digit cold, & wind chills down to -10F (-23C) though, if it gets into the 40s or 50s F, I probably won't need a jacket for it to feel warm to me outside.
I kinda like newspapers going digital. I don't have to pay for the news anymore. The parts that you can't read without a fee & membership? Well, there's always ways around that to anybody with average computer & internet skills. With today's modern phones one can even read most newspapers on a phone.
But what will we line the bird cage floor with, or beat the dog who just chewed up your best shoes with?
I keep the litter box on newspapers. The kitten's food & water dish sit on newspaper too. They're also great to help start a campfire, wood burning stove, or real fireplace.
-
It's hard to imagine a mild winter in Buffalo. Here in Chicago I awoke to a reading of 0 on Tuesday morning, although it finally warmed up to 8 during the course of the day. It was one of those days when the girls in my grade school would come to class wearing corduroy pants under their dresses, which they would remove (the corduroy pants that is) as soon as they were in the classroom. In our neighborhood everyone walked to school (or were driven by a parent), went home at noon for lunch and returned to school an hour later.
I have mixed feelings about digitalization. On the one hand, you no longer need an unwieldy multi-volume edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica to find information--it's all there at your fingertips. As far as newspapers go, I can never seem to find what I'm looking for in the online edition but I can in the print edition. Also, I'm a member of the "things I learned on the way to looking up something else" school of self-education which is the result of leafing through all the pages of a paper's print edition. And at least here in Chicago the information is not as freely available as it once was. The Sun-Times allows you to read 20 pages free per month, then you have to pay. It's a little more liberal over at the Tribune, but you still have to register with them and provide certain information (so advertisers can track you?).
-
I want to be able to fold the newspaper and do the crossword puzzle on the bus. Doing the puzzle electronically will never be the same to me. I'm a very tactile person and like the feel of the newsprint in my hands. And years ago technology came up with a method of printing the paper so that the newsprint doesn't come off on your fingers as you read it. I hear what you're saying about the cost though Betty, it costs me $11.75 for the five Sunday newspapers I buy. As the New York Times cost a quarter on Sundays when I was a kid this is still hard for me to fathom.
Spankypants, where did you find your avatar, very cute.

Hi Andy--
The avatar was made from a vidcap from an old Donald O'Connor movie (I think it might have been I Love Melvin). I saw someone else use this image, but there are subtle differences between his and mine. I also flopped mine so the "sissy" would be facing the message box. I like the image because the dress reminds me of one of the ones I used to wear in grade school (after school, weekends, special events, and Halloween). Back then I had a somewhat fortunate combination of an "enabling" mother and absentee father. It was also nice to have grown up in an era when little girls dressed like little girls.

Thanks, it's adorable.

Spanky, I think it's from "Anything Goes" from 1955. It has a scene onboard a cruise ship where Donald O'Connor dances with a group of children.

Hi Lindsey,
Looks like you are right. And if you can believe it, the entire film is posted to youtube. The dance sequence you refer to is at the 1 hour 21 minute mark.
I appears the little girl got a photoshop haircut. But all the girls are wearing cute dresses.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Another remarkably chilly day here in Northeast New Jersey, 18 degrees when I left the house at 8AM and my thermometer currently reads in the mid 20’s. It was nice to see the groundhogs agree that we will have an early Spring. Both Punxsutawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck saw their shadow this morning although they probably would have been happier if they saw breakfast. Can’t say if the groundhog carries any weight but I would be truly pleased if things start to warm up a little.
I took a walk uptown to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this museum, the cold battering me and making my nose run the whole way but it was worthwhile as aside from the exercise I saw a splendid little exhibition. It was actually two small shows in the Robert Lehman wing of the museum on the first floor. The Lehman wing has an outstanding permanent collection which is always worthwhile visiting owing to its magnificent Rembrandt and Ingres portraits just to mention two notable paintings. But there are two special exhibitions currently on display, each in a single room which is what brought me to the museum. The first is “The Path of Nature: French Paintings From the Wheelock Whitney Collection, 1785-1850.” It was an exhibit of lesser known artists but not artists of lesser talent. Beautiful paintings of landscapes, ancient ruins, cloud formations and images of contemporary Italian life. The artist Leopold Boilly is represented by a beautiful portrait of a young woman, head and shoulders. On the plaque describing the painting it said that Boilly finished these paintings in about 2 ½ hours so that the sitter would be able to take the painting with her/him. He estimated that he did 4500 portraits in this manner! These were clearly working artists. This is a link to the Boilly painting.
http://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/view?exhibitionId=%7bfe4e0259-a50d-4418-8afe-aec76fa55916%7d&oid=110003330&ft=*&fe=1
This is a link to the Met museum website showing all of the paintings in the exhibit.
http://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/objects?exhibitionId={FE4E0259-A50D-4418-8AFE-AEC76FA55916}&pg=1&rpp=20
This is a link to a NY Times article about the exhibit.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/25/arts/design/the-path-of-nature-at-the-metropolitan-museum-of-art.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
The drawing exhibit was also wonderful as it had several Rembrandt’s and a Paul Signac depiction of a large oil painting that he had done. Lehman had excellent taste and lots of money so he was able to put together a formidable collection. But in leaving it to the Met he stipulated that it had to remain complete, that is, the different pieces couldn’t be sent to the areas in the museum where other paintings of the same vintage reside. So if you go to European paintings and visit the Dutch you will see many Rembrandt’s but not the one that Lehman donated. To see that you must visit the special wing the Met designed for his collection.
It was nice to get back to the museum and see wonderful art. Anyone who is in the New York Metropolitan area should certainly go out of their way to visit the Met and see all their beautiful treasures.
Now let’s see what’s at the Flickrs.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Well, snowmageddon has apparently become passe as I saw the current storm being discussed as snowpocalypse. Not sure where the hype and one-upmanship can go after this. And calling the storm Nemo doesn’t seem to have gotten a lot of favor. Don’t see that there will be a lot of tee shirts saying I survived Nemo. Anyway, the Northeast certainly took a beating, some areas more so than others. My friend on the Northern shore of Long Island got about 2 1/2 feet, as did Ct. and Maine. Massachusetts, which was expecting the worst, wound up with about 22 inches. Betty will correct me if this news account is incorrect but it says she got about 8 inches. In New Jersey here we got about 10 inches. I was up around 5 AM and pleased to see that my man had been by and cleaned up my property. My days with a shovel are over, I always thought of it as heart attack work. I did my grocery shopping on Thursday night as I feared I wouldn’t be able to use my car this morning and even though I could have I’m glad I didn’t have to. As this is my week to visit my Aunt in Queens my main concern was the bus into the City. When I woke up and checked, NJ Transit was still suspended. As the storm was over I felt it would have to start up again soon and luckily it did at 8AM. As I am in the middle of the bus schedule I never know exactly when the bus might come if the system says it’s starting at 8AM but I went out a little before 8AM and the bus came right on schedule. I was the first passenger and it was a smooth ride into the city. The subways ran smoothly as well albeit local going and coming. So I appear to have escaped this storm unscathed and I hope other board members in affected areas also weren’t inconvenienced.
Nothing else going on of much import. In art news there was the terrible story of the lunatic woman who defaced what is arguably one of the greatest paintings in the world, Delacroix’s “Liberty Leading the People.” According to an article from The Guardian, the graffiti was removed without damaging the painting. These kinds of incidents are always disturbing and the danger for art lovers is that museums will go to harsher measures like roping off paintings and putting all of them under glass. This is a link to the article for those interested. http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2013/feb/08/delacroix-painting-defaced-louvre

Thank you as always Andy for your efforts. I'm in CT and I'm looking out my window right now and my street is covered with snow in upwards of four feet with the drifting. I have not seen hide nor hair of a plow all day Saturday. My car is also buried. I'm 67. I'll never be able to shovel it out. I feel sop trapped. I may be here until your Spring Flicker starts

Francene,
I'm so sorry to hear that, isn't there a neighbor who can help out? I empathise as I'm only a few years younger and I live alone.
Good luck, hope you get some assistance.

Yeah. Have somebody, family, friend or emergency services check in on you. Some will take you out in a snowmobile or run to the store or whatever for you... or possibly cut a small path to your door.
With the heart attack a few years ago, & COPD I shouldn't shovel anymore either. Sometimes in the morning or late at night I get out of breath just going to the bathroom. But just before lunchtime when I've been moving about a few hours & more active, sometimes I can walk a couple miles before I start breathing too heavy.
Sold my truck after the fire so have to walk to the stores & errands. Most of the time it's only 1/2 to 1 mile round trip but when carrying 40-60 lbs of groceries in a backpack, & bags, it's still an almost heart attack errand. The few jobs I'm getting are about 2 miles away. From how the buses run, it's still about 1/2 mile of walking each way. The buses charge $1.75 per trip, so I try to walk all of it whenever possible. Most of my friends & family aren't in much better shape or live way too far away (or are dead). So I'm also on my own to survive & run around any way I can.
That's another reason why I moved into a mansion converted into lots of small apartments last year. It's maintenance-free. I don't have to deal with snow removal or heavy yard work anymore. Driveways get plowed right away, but sidewalks can take up to a week before somebody does them.
We were lucky. We only caught the southern edge of the storm, so only got about 5" of snow in the city. It been warmer the past couple of days, & will continue to be warm the rest of the week. So almost all the snow melted. The back & front yard has turned into a quicksand-like muddy swamp. The corners of many intersections are flooded with deep large pond-like puddles of ice water, only passable on foot with tall waterproof boots.
We're expecting near hurricane strength winds tonight. So I'm topping of the charge on all my batteries just in case of a power failure. Haven't had the furnace on since Sun. morning. With the warmer weather it's been staying in the upper 60s inside for the past 2 days. The apartments beside, above, & below me give off heat, so I'm well insulated from the elements. Computers, TV/monitor, fridge, coffee maker, & cooking give off plenty of heat in a small insulated apartment too. So if the power goes out, it will eventually get too cold in here, but should stay warmer longer than most places.
-
Thank you for your concerns Andy and Betty. Good things happened on Sunday. I live in a small, 6 unit apartment house. A man with a back hoe started up the street about 9 AM. All the residents of the house (me included) formed a team and we worked with the back hoe operator and methodically uncovered and moved 6 cars one at a time. As we uncovered a car, it was moved down to the cleared part of the street which gave room to do the next car kind of in a leap frog action. Since it is a dead end street, moving each car also gave the back hoe operator a place to push the snow over the side. In about 3 hours the entire street and all the cars were basically uncovered and free of snow. With 6 people wielding shovels no one had to work too hard. Organized teamwork really is a thing of beauty. CT got an average of about 30" of snow. With the drifting, I had snow up to my waist, I thought I would be immobile until June.
Thank you back hoe operator and thank you neighbors.

I remember the snows we had back in 1979. We didn't have a lot at a time but we got about six inches just about every day. And it was cold too. We got to the point where they couldn't plow anymore and we were without police and fire protection for close to ten days. We still had some snow on the ground going into the early part of June that year.

Although I now live in S Carolina, and snow is v-e-r-y rare here. I remember all-to-well the northern snows as I spent my childhood, and some of my adult life in central New York about 150 miles east of you Betty. I am also in the 60+ range.
The year I remember the best was what we called the "Blizzard of '66" My brothers and I went into the garage (from the house) and got the water skiis out of my Dad's boat then brought them upstairs, crawled out a bedroom window, and used them as snow shoes to get around the neighborhood.
I have to admit, I don't miss those days at all
Please everyone here stay warm and safe!

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
It was another chilly day here but despite the cold weather I walked up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this morning to visit with our Japanese friends. It was a very nice exhibit, Birds in the Art of Japan. I’ve only come to appreciate Japanese art in the last few years and now I always find things to recommend in it. I especially enjoy the colored ink on paper drawings, very vivid colors, fine lines and delicate depictions. The Met always has a wall of these. One that I particularly liked didn’t follow the bird motif but was a wonderful picture of a tiger. “Never Seen Before: True Picture of a Live Wild Tiger.” This is a link to that illustration.
http://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/view?exhibitionId=%7b6651208C-015B-414A-940B-B57D76631780%7d&oid=60047486&pg=2&rpp=60&pos=95&ft=*
On the opposite wall from these drawings were a series of black birds, mostly crows done in ink on silk. Very striking. The rest of the exhibit was wall hangings, screens and delicate objects made from ceramics, lacquerware, and bamboo, all of which are very beautiful. The objects are called inrō and are traditional Japanese cases for holding small objects, suspended from the obi. They were functional objects that were also things of beauty. The screens are magnificent, one was of 12 panels roughly 10 feet wide and 12 feet high depicting a white peacock on one side and a white peahen on the other.
This is a link to all the images in the exhibit.

I had a splendid time, then I had a typical New York City transit adventure. I won’t go into detail but it involved buses being rerouted and trains not running at all which turned a 20 minute ride into a 45 minute frustration. With all the walking I was glad to finally be home drinking my coffee.
Tonight we are supposed to have snow showers but with no accumulation beyond a few inches. (hopefully) But tomorrow morning it will be in the low 20s and feel like 10 degrees. Winter still has a ways to go I fear.
And now, here’s your Flickr du jour.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Well I’m pleased to report that the weather is a little milder today, albeit rainy. That really terrible storm in the Mid-West has not arrived here, at least not yet, and if it should I’m told it will be rain and not snow. The scenes of the snowstorm in Kansas with the snow blowing sideways because of the winds were a little daunting. And it was startling to read about a golf tournament in Phoenix, Arizona that was postponed due to 2 inches of snow, not something I imagine they encounter very often. I have a friend who has retired to Arizona and recently I had been recounting our weather adventures and he said it was one of the things he didn’t miss about leaving our area. I guess he got a brief reminder.
A very quiet day, I took the subway out to visit my ancient Aunt this morning. Things were going along smoothly when the train pulled into a station, sat for a minute and then the announcement that no subway rider ever wants to hear was broadcast over the loudspeaker… we have a sick passenger on the train and are being held in the station. The woman standing next to me immediately said out loud, oh no, it’ll be 45 minutes! And she wasn’t much off the mark as we sat there for about 35 minutes. My main concern was that I was nearing the end of my book and I did not want to have to face the ride home with nothing to read. I never leave the house without a newspaper, book, magazine or crossword puzzle as you never know when you will be stranded somewhere before you reach your destination. I love to read and can’t fathom sitting, even for a brief time, without having something to read. My commute to the City takes about half an hour and every morning and afternoon I read the current New Yorker and if I’ve finished that I’ll bring my latest book. But most people on the bus don’t read. Some try to sleep. Some sit and listen to music on their headphones which in some cases is so loud that if they are sitting next to me I can hear at about the same volume as if I had the radio on in my car. And really liked the song! These people I assume will be deaf at some point in their later lives. I was riding in one morning and the man sitting next to me was reading which surprised me. We rode a while and I wondered what he was looking at so I glanced over and discovered he was reading a menu. For the entire trip. When we got off all I could think was, I hope he’s a chef. But the majority of people sit on the bus the entire ride just staring ahead which completely baffles me. How can you just let your brain hibernate for thirty minutes, it’s really beyond me?
Well, let’s see who has come to the Pub to visit today.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Well, it’s March and we have not seen the lion yet. It was brisk this morning but not stormy and I took a walk up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see their latest show, Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity. This is the first, but hopefully not the only, blockbuster exhibit of the season. Roberta Smith in the NY Times gave it a rave and Andy G. will second that heartily. This is a splendid exhibit of big, beautiful Impressionist paintings that depict upper middle class life in the Nineteenth Century. What makes this especially good is that the paintings depicted women in the height of fashion wearing astonishingly beautiful dresses and the Met has borrowed a number of the actual dresses that are depicted in the exhibit. Not to mention, hats, corsets, shoes and gloves. Of course the corsets constricted the women’s bodies but when you look at the dresses it is startling to see how small the women’s waists were. I seem to vaguely recall that during this period it was thought that the perfect size for a woman’s waist was one that a man could put both hands around and have the fingers touch. There are paintings in the exhibit that I’ve had the good fortune to see on my travels as well as at the Met but there are many more that I viewed for the first time. One of the highlights, which I knew nothing about, is an enormous painting by Claude Monet “Luncheon on the Grass” which was originally supposed to be 20 feet wide and 14 feet high. It was created for the Impressionist exhibition of 1866 but Monet didn’t have the money to pay his rent and gave it to his landlord as security and was unable to show the painting. When he retrieved it from the landlord’s basement it was damaged from dampness and he wound up cutting it into three pieces, one of which has disappeared while the remaining two are in this exhibit. In addition to the art there is an enormous amount of information in the plaques on the wall describing each piece. This show was just a delight from start to finish and I will go back at least one more time. It also has what is arguably my favorite painting, Madame Charpentier and her children. Many of you are familiar with this painting because Paul, who was three years old in the painting, had not had his first haircut and is dressed in a dress to match that of his older sister. For some time, when the painting was shown in a book or discussed it was referred to as Madame Charpentier and her daughters until it was brought to light who Paul actually was. Despite having seen this painting numerous times on my visits to the Met I still found myself standing in front of it today admiring it. Aside from Paul looking like a little girl it is a spectacular painting with much going on and much to admire. This is a link to an image of the painting from the Met website.
Madame Georges Charpentier (Marguérite-Louise Lemonnier, 1848–1904) and Her Children, Georgette-Berthe (1872–1945) and Paul-Émile-Charles (1875–1895)

And this is a link to a room by room description of the exhibit from the Metropolitan Museum website. I regret to say that the Met hasn’t posted images which I thought they did as a matter of course. If you are interested any particular item I’ve found that images of many famous paintings can be brought up just by typing their title into a search engine.

Before I turn the floor over to our guests I want to make a brief comment about the newspaper article about the little boy who is taking on the role of a girl. One aspect I found interesting is that he is a triplet with a brother and a sister. I’ve often wondered what it must be like for boys who are fraternal twins or triplets when it comes to the question of clothing. Especially for parents that like to dress them in matching outfits. What must a little boy think when his sister, who has always been treated the same as he is suddenly is given a pretty party dress to wear and he is told that he can’t have one as well. I’m sure there are lots of boys who don’t understand and find it hard to accept the explanation that his sister can wear the dress because she is a girl. Especially when he wears pants and shorts and his sister can wear pants and shorts. Must seem very unfair.
Anyway, on to the Flickrs. I think I could easily fall In love with Kyoko our first guest.
And in previewing the post I had to remove five links which were no longer active and replace them with five new ones. I'm glad Kyoko stayed around.

Well you certainly are not wearing the outfit in your avatar in any kind of winter weather.
Now about the outfit in the avatar - pardon for this - but is that really you ?
It is a striking outfit with all the details just perfect:
High Empire type waist line dress
Puffy short sleeves
More than adequate petticoat coverage
Just enough of a hint of the panties without bending over
A padded crotch hinting of diapers (or more) within
And the anklet sox with the tasteful Mary Jane shoes
Now that is my kind of Sissy

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Well, the lion I referred to last week stopped by for a visit this week but he must have been a little tired as his roaring was kept to a reasonable level, at least in these parts. The snow storm was a non-event in New York City while we received about 4 or 5 inches in my community. I was cheered to see my man clearing my driveway when I got home on Friday. I’m hoping that the lion doesn’t take offense at my comments and that this is our last storm for the season. Spring is definitely coming, we spring ahead tonight and while I hate to lose the hour of sleep I look forward to seeing sunlight earlier in the day as well as later in the afternoon. And it’s in the 50’s today and dry which I hope is a good sign.
I mentioned turning the clocks ahead this weekend to my young co-worker and she told me that she doesn’t have any clocks that don’t automatically change. Clearly a generational thing. I also told her that this is the first house I’ve ever lived in that doesn’t have a clock hanging on the wall in the kitchen. I brought it with me from my previous abode but there didn’t seem to be a place for it and with the cable box, the microwave, the oven and the alarm clock it didn’t seem urgent to mount. I can remember sitting in my living room in the comfy chair in the old house and in the quiet hearing the clock tick. That would be when I wasn’t hearing the guys with the boomboxes in their cars sitting outside my front door. My big brother brought me home a cuckoo clock when he was in the Navy and I was a child and I loved it. When my Dad passed away and we emptied the apartment I must have decided it should go along with the rest of the things I didn’t think I still wanted. Not keeping things was very alien to my nature but disposing of this stuff was due mostly to the fact that I was living with roommates and my space was about 8ft x 8ft and I already had three filing cabinets and close to 20 years of TV Guides, not to mention boxes of books and newspapers. While it would be nice to have the cuckoo clock I confess I probably wouldn’t have it running as I’m sure the cuckooing would have driven me cuckoo now. What I do regret not bringing along are three things, my baseball cards, my Yankee yearbooks from 1960-1964 and my Baseball Digests. Not sure why I didn’t take the cards, but I guess I wasn’t that into baseball. The Mets were ascendant so I did keep my Met’s yearbooks, the first two, 1962 and 1963. Managed to pick up a bunch of the Digests on EBAY but the Yankee yearbooks are too dear and I didn’t really feel compelled to spend the money.
Anyway, a quiet day as is so often the case. Visited my ancient Aunt and spoke with an old friend on the phone. And once I send this off I will think about dinner.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
I was surprised in looking at my calendar to realize that Spring is actually just a few days away, March 20th. On the calendar at least, outside my window it is currently snowing. But my weatherman this morning promised me that it wasn’t go to be a big snowstorm and he wouldn’t mislead me would he? I think we’ll move on at this point.
This morning I took the bus into New York City and after walking downtown to Trader Joe’s to buy almonds, I took the subway back uptown to the New York Public Library at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue. When I embarked I wasn’t thinking of the St. Patrick’s Day parade being held today but on the walk downtown it did occur to me to check as to when it started and where it ran. I was cheered to see that it started at 11AM and began on 44th Street, several blocks past the Library. As the library opens at 10AM I felt I could get in and out without having to deal with the parade or its viewers.
This turned out to be true although there certainly were a lot of people in the City for the parade. The front of the Library, where Patience and Fortitude, the two lions who guard it sit, was closed and the police had the steps blocked off which made me wonder about whether it was open. But I saw a sign sending me to the 42nd Street side entrance which was my preferred entrance many years ago when I used to frequent the library on a more regular basis. This was before I had a computer and I would go to the library on Saturday’s to do some early surfing of the web. They also had art exhibits outside the main reading room, one of which was a recurring showing of Charles Addams famous cartoons of his Addams Family. These were and are wonderful.
Today I was drawn there by an exhibition of Mary Cassatt prints. I read about it in the Jersey newspaper but don’t think I’ve seen anything in the Times yet. There are 88 prints in the show with a number of colored ones that are quite beautiful. The exhibit is on the third floor in the hallways on either side of the main reading room. I was very surprised to see that they had a very nicely made 20 page catalog of the exhibit at no charge. Didn’t think they could afford it. The Library has a vast collection of art beyond the vast collection of books, periodicals and other printed matter. These prints have never been shown together in an exhibit. They were part of a donation made in 1900 by a man named Samuel Putnam Avery, an art dealer of the 19th Century. He gave the library 17,000 prints. It was a splendid exhibit, I’m glad I got to see it and managed to escape without being molested by paradegoers.
If you go to the link below there is a further link to the actual 20 page brochure which has illustrations of the items on exhibit.

Thinking about the library and their collections and my love of books and newspapers and paper collectibles leads me to post the following 33 second video. I’m a very tactile person, I like the feel of paper and don’t enjoy reading things on the web, although for my work I have no choice. But this video, the title of which is, “the end of paper” gave me a good giggle the other morning when I received it. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
I will open by saying that I unequivocally agree with the Ohio prosecutor who has indicted Punxsutawney Phil for lying about our enjoying an early spring. I always knew he was lying, rotten little rodent and I’m glad he will get his comeuppance.
http://www.ktnv.com/news/watercooler/199532811.html
Bearing the hog in mind let just say that it’s another pretty cold and windy day here in the Northeast with a storm of some type set for Monday. And, to my consternation, I read an article in the NJ paper saying that this Winter had above average temperatures by more than 2 degrees making this the 13th warmest Winter since 1895. And no, Andy G is a geezer but he doesn’t remember that one. I’m beginning to think there may be no Spring Flickr, just an endless Winter.
Aside from this meteorological frippery I don’t have much to report. I was gratified during the week to read that the mystery of who stole the 13 paintings from the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum in 1990 may be close to being solved. If the paintings were returned it would be a wonderful thing. This article below explains the whole story and the link below it displays some of the paintings. These are magnificent paintings and we have to hope that they haven’t been damaged or destroyed.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
It looks to be a beautiful day here in Northern New Jersey and I am heading down to the Jersey shore for a visit with friends. Haven’t seen them since Xmas. As three of us have birthdays in April I have baked us an April birthday cake.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
It’s a beautiful day, which I’m hoping is a harbinger of Spring actually finally being here. Looking forward to turning off my boiler. I received what I also hope will be the last rather large heating bill of the season the other day and it had an interesting factoid. The bill compares the temperature for the prior three months to the same period last year. I may have mentioned that the newspaper claims that we had an above average Winter temperature wise. My bill showed me that the average temperature for March of this year was 40 degrees, 12 degrees lower than March of 2012. I can only say, brrr!
Had a lovely time with my friends last week. We celebrated four birthdays, three in April and one in March and those of you who notice things like this will be aware that my birthday is April 4th. My andyg0404 didn’t stop a long-time friend from calling me on the 3rd and being surprised when I informed him he was a day early. And, as I’ve been fond of saying to all my friends, despite playing a senior citizen at the museums for the last few years I am now officially a senior citizen. That is, I turned 62 and I am now eligible for social security. Not that I can afford to retire just yet but it’s nice to know that it’s available if things become dire. It certainly is true that birthdays come with much more rapidity as we age. Every year I find myself wondering how I could have possibly reached the current number so quickly. But I won’t start worrying until I stop having birthdays and then I guess it won’t matter.
No other news of note but I’ll leave you all with a giggle. Hope this makes you laugh.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
We had a nice little stretch of beautiful weather and then Winter returned on Friday but I think we may have seen the last of it, at least I hope so. It was chilly this morning but warmed up in the afternoon and should get warmer as the week progresses.
I traveled into New York City early this morning to visit with Valentino, my barber. It’s almost 4 months since my last visit but I wasn’t especially hirsute. If it wasn’t for my beard I could probably have put it off for another month or two. Not like when I was younger and my hair was actually still growing on a regular basis. Valentino was profiled in the NY Times a few months ago and I asked if it had resulted in new business and he said he had 22 customers stop by as a result but apparently they haven’t turned into regular clients. I’ve been seeing him for probably 20 years. I always look very different after he does his wonders. As I was leaving an older woman commented, no one will recognize you!
From the barber shop I took the subway uptown to visit the Morgan Library. There were several small exhibits, one of which was what drew me there. It was Degas’ painting of Madame La La at Le Cirque Fernando. La La was an aerialist of the 19th Century. Her trick was being hoisted to great heights by a rope held in her mouth and that’s what Degas depicted in his painting. Her greatest trick though involved a 150 pound cannon which she also lifted in her teeth that was subsequently fired while she was holding it. It imagine it must have been quite a spectacle. The other items in the show were sketches by Degas, several posters of the circus and a few small paintings, one by Tolouse Lautrec. Not a major exhibition but a nice diversion for a Saturday morning.
This is a link to the Morgan Library press release describing the exhibit.
http://www.themorgan.org/about/press/MissLaLaPressRelease.pdf
Another exhibit offered surrealistic art which for me was a quick stroll. Surrealism is one step away from abstract art, a genre that totally eludes me. At least in Surrealism there is some form to the composition, most of the time anyway. Not to damn it with faint praise but it was “interesting.” Not something I would have made a special trip for though.
There are two other small exhibits I expect to visit in the next month or two, Impressionist drawings at the Frick and John Singer Sargent’s watercolors at the Brooklyn Museum. I expect to find more to appreciate in those shows.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr
In looking back through the weekly Flickr posts I see that the weather continues to confound. Twice I thought the nice weather had arrived only to bemoan another cold spell the following week and today it’s another rather cool day with Winter weather in store for this evening. We certainly seem to be in a period of extreme weather. Not often that games several weeks into the baseball season are snowed out as recently happened to the Mets. The way they played in the games that weren’t postponed that may have been a good thing. Been following the Mets since their inaugural season in 1962 and the highlights have been much rarer than the lowlights. But hope springs eternal. My following of the team, like the other sports that I have a passing interest in, consists of reading about them in the newspapers. Haven’t been to a game in years and can’t remember watching one on TV for quite some time either. For the most part it’s not easy to root for the players or management, all of whom seem to be making piles of money and have basically made the game unaffordable for families. As the kids who are now priced out of the games grow up I wonder who the baseball audience will consist of.
Well, enough musing. Like most weeks that I visit my ancient Aunt I don’t have a lot to say. So I guess I’ll just say, let’s go to the Flickrs.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
Spring continues to creep up on us, taking very small steps. This week the mornings were cold but the afternoons were pleasant. I’m waiting for the warmth to arrive and stay.
This morning followed the pattern so I wore my light jacket and my hat and walked up to the Metropolitan Museum. They currently have Velázquez’s Portrait of Duke Francesco I d’Este: A Masterpiece from the Galleria Estense, Modena” on display until July. That was my sole interest on this visit as I planned on heading down to the Frick Museum immediately after. The painting has been given a room of its own, something that frankly mystifies me. It sits in the middle of the room surrounded by nothing. But it is a masterpiece and very beautiful although to my weak eyes it did look like it could have used a good cleaning. It’s a study for a much larger painting that was never finished owing to the slowness of Velazquez’ production. Below is an article from the Times discussing the exhibit and asking the same questions I did about hanging it by itself. The Met is undergoing more construction and there were lots of closed galleries and I wondered where the Vermeers, Rembrandts and Canalettos were currently residing but that will have to wait for another visit as I wanted to get down to the Frick.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/19/arts/design/velazquezs-portrait-of-duke-francesco-i-deste-at-the-met.html?_r=0
The exhibit at the Frick was “The Impressionist Line From Degas To Toulouse-Lautrec: Drawings And Prints From The Clark” and it had many of my favorites. There was a Monet caricature, done when he was 18, which couldn’t have been less depictive of his style, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s how he made his living at the start of his career. It was a classic caricature, a very large head on a much smaller body with very small legs and feet. It showed a man with an enormous nose who was holding a snuff box which, as the drawing represented, would have led to an enormous sneeze. Nor was I aware that he was known back then as Oscar. Below is a link which discusses this era in his life and also has illustrations, including the man with the big nose.
http://poulwebb.blogspot.com/2011/12/cluade-monet-caricatures.html
The Toulouse Lautrec’s were absolutely wonderful, colorful depictions of circus performers and denizens of the cabarets, including the lesbians and prostitutes. Etchings by Manet, Gaugin, Courbet, Degas and others, including two by Daumier, one of which was a send up of lawyers. There was a Degas engraving of an Etruscan tomb in the Louvre. The card next to it described his etching of Mary Cassatt and her sister in the Louvre which coincidentally I just saw at the Cassatt exhibit at the New York Public library. Another exhibit, just about to close was, “Piero della Francesca in America,” which “brings together seven works, including six panels from the Sant’Agostino altarpiece — the largest number from this masterwork ever reassembled for display.” I am not a big fan of religious art and if I had not seen this I would not have felt deprived but I’m glad I was able to take it in before it closed. Below is a link to a Frick press release describing the drawing exhibit. And below that is a link to some of the images.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
A rather nice day on the whole, albeit still only 40 degrees in the morning when I awoke. I’d really like to turn my boiler off.
It was my week to visit my ancient Aunt and it was a long ride out; my bus was late and full. I wound up sitting on the bench in the back, something I try to avoid. I also try not to stand, especially since I’m not quite as steady as I used to be. The reading lights weren't on, which is annoying, and I was surprised when the young man sitting next to me took out his cell phone and turned it into the kind of light that miners wear on their helmets. That's a trick I had never seen. The Lincoln tunnel was crowded and I got into the Port Authority 20 or 30 minutes later than normal. I just missed the subway train and it ran local. My Aunt who continues to amaze and confound me commented that I had made good time. I let it go.
On the way home I took the subway down to 14th Street to buy almonds at Trader's Joes. It was mobbed. The line pretty much went around the store. This is also the first time I've gone there where I asked if it was the express line and was told there was no express, just two lines. Although the line I got on seemed to have mostly people with just a few items. It's remarkable that it actually went very quickly. My nuts were 4.99 a pound and I bought two bags. I handed the cashier a ten dollar bill and 3 pennies. As she looked at the register telling her to give me back a nickel she appeared to think it was magic.
I walked back over to 8th Avenue and took the C train to the Port Authority. I had to stand. At one point I was transferring my bags and reached for the pole and stumbled and a very nice young man grabbed my arm and steadied me. I thanked him. At the Port Authority the platforms for the buses were moved around again and when I got to the platform the bus was late. It finally came and when I got off in my town, before I could cross the street, it made the turn. Then before I could cross the street again, another bus made the turn. Two buses in a row is never a good sign and a good indication of what had happened to the schedule..
I got home at 2PM and on the whole felt like I had been on a Hadj.
Well, now that that is out of the way let’s see who is entertaining us at the Flickrs.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.
This will be brief. I’m heading up to New Haven this morning to visit the Yale University Art Gallery. I had been there some time ago and much of the museum was closed for renovations but now the full museum has finally reopened. Looking forward to a pleasant day although it will be seeded with thunderstorms which is annoying. It seems that quite often when I travel for my art viewings I run into inclement weather. Pretty sure it poured the last time I was in New Haven as well.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.
