Hi,

A few antiques from the auction site.

Hi Ace,

I've always been fond of sailor dresses myself. Here's a cute boy from the auction site.

Sepia Vintage Photo Toronto Canada Little Boy In Dress Old Tree Trunk Prop Look

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sepia-Vintage-Photo-Toronto-Canada-Little-Boy-In-Dress-Old-Tree-Trunk-Prop-Look-/350691298535?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item51a6d48ce7

And below is a painting by Kirill Vikentevich Lemokh, Children at the Piano, which shows another cute boy in the pleated white sailor dress which I especially like. This has been around the Internet for some time and I'm pretty sure it was posted to the Pub a while ago, possibly by me, but it was only today that I bothered looking up the artist.

Awww Andy, thanks for the Kirill painting, you certainly know how to pick them. I can hear my nasty sister now .... "come along Wendy, you've only yourself to blame. You will wear my old sailor dress every time I want you to, or I'll tell mother all about you hiding my underwear in your bedroom!"

Thanks Andy for posting that, I would like to know more about that painting and the subjects in it. I wish there were more like it. He looks very cute in that picture and I can barely take my eyes off him, it's a pity the artist only did one painting of that boy, one can only imagine what he would have looked like in another dress. The sailor suit ensemble he's wearing shows he definitely suits dresses.

While I've been very fond of your pictures, especially those you find on the auction site, we do get to see the boys legs in that painting, which you very rarely see in the pictures on the auction site. They're more often covered in those horrible long stockings.

I hope you don't mind, I've taken the liberty of posting a much brighter version of the one you posted.

You could be right about the stance, take a look at the image below, the one on the right shows a real girl, now compare her stance, with that of the boy in the left picture, taking particular note regarding the position of the legs.

I often see pictures of girls such as those in the pictures that follow and I tend to think they show what I call pseudo boys in dresses.

Pseudo describes someone or something fake, false or pretend. (adjective)

I've seen a lot of pictures both in art and photograph showing girls where I've used the term  pseudo, that is to say, I've pretended that the girl in the picture is a boy.

Hi Andy-- Thanks for the find. It's always interesting to look at photos of teens from the 1940s and 1950s and note how much older they appeared for their ages back then than they do today. What's really scary to me about viewing the guys in the two photos in drag is that they actually looked BETTER than the REAL girls who attended my old college.

Hi,

My old friend Buster Brown and his friends clearly like girl's clothes. Just the second page of a two sheet comic strip.

I remember all of the Buster Brown shoe commercials from when I was little. My father never let me buy Buster Brown products for myself because Buster Brown was a big 'sissy'.  Ah well.....

It's funny about Buster Brown, he may have been considered a sissy in later years because of the page boy haircut and his clothes but when he originally appeared in the newspapers he was a mischievous kid who was always getting into trouble for doing outrageous things. The last panel, which quite often showed him with a pillow around his bottom from his spanking, was usually a resolution which Wikipedia points out was a self-justifying moral which had little or nothing to do with his crime. I confess I fell in love with him when I first saw him changing clothes with a little girl in one of the strips. It was so easy and it was his idea. Poor little things, he and the little girl both got spankings for their efforts.

Hi,

This is up on the auction site.

AFA-452 VINTAGE PUBLISHED PHOTO- CHARLES LAMONT & BIG BOY

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AFA-452-VINTAGE-PUBLISHED-PHOTO-CHARLES-LAMONT-BIG-BOY-/310644191202?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item4853d62fe2

Many years ago I used to spend some time on Saturdays at the NY Library for the Performing Arts Research Collection, looking for theatrical images of crossdressing. It was there that I discovered Big Boy, the juvenile actor Malcolm Sebastian. He made a series of kid films as a small boy in the twenties during the silent era. One of them was "She's A Boy", which is where the auction photo originates. Unfortunately I've never been able to locate a print of the film although I saw on a blog that copies of it have survived. I was able to find an old newspaper Herald for the film at the library which I photocopied. I'll upload three pages from it but due to file size constrictions, and the quality of the original, it will be difficult to read.

This is a summary of the plot from the Herald.
Girl's Clothes Worn by "Big Boy" in New Film

Sooner or later, all screen comedians appear in feminine garb. But it remained for "Big Boy," the baby star who is only three years old, to doll up in a girl's raiment as the youngest female impersonator. He does just that in "She's A Boy", and with most laughable results.
"Big Boy" appears as disgusted as he probably was to have to wear a girl's dress in this Educational Comedy which is now playing at the ....... Theatre. The youngster, a war orphan, is adopted into the household of a wealthy man, who immediately insists that he get rid of his old army coat and other worn-out clothes.  The only available piece of clothing is that belonging to the baby daughter of the family.
When "Big Boy" first appears in this outfit, the audience howls with glee. And when he and the young daughter start performing on the payer piano, the joy is unconfined.

I'll post the other two sheets in separate emails.

Cute and interesting !

Any way to enlarge the newsprint to read more detail ?
I click on the jpg and get an image - but when I attempt to enlarge it the focus goes out - - -
Only the large font retains some semblence to read.
