Title: I have been after this book for thirty years!
Post by: Kirath on January 24, 2018, 07:13:31 PM
“I Want What I Want” by Geoff Brown

Hello folks: I have been after this book for about thirty years! When I was a student in the eighties I read a couple of books by Geoff Brown and fell in love with his writing style: clean, bare and honest.

Then I found out about “I Want What I Want” and I simply had to have it. It ticked every box: CD/TG, great author, and it was set in Yorkshire! Trouble is, it was out of print, and nobody was selling it. Every library I went in, up and down the country, the “Fiction B” section was the first place I went to, but without success. I even tried the British Library when I was living in London, but they don't ;et you take books out there.

They made a film about it in the seventies, and it was all right, despite them chickening out (as usual) and casting a woman in the main role.

It seemed like I was destined to die without reading this novel, but then a couple of weeks ago I managed to get hold of a PDF on the internet. I don't think I've every been happier to own a book! In fact I know I haven't. God bless the internet!

I Want What I Want” is everything I hoped it would be. I LOVE the way it is written, and treasure every word. It is my Sunday night reading in the bath. When I am finished I will probably start again from the beginning.

I am currently trying to find places to share it online in the hope that other people can enjoy it as much as I have.

It would be interesting to hear if anybody else here knows about this book, and if you have read it, what you think of it.

I never heard of it before. I see copyrights for it listed as 1966. It's in stores in print copy for around $50-$90. But at a quick glance around, I see many public & university libraries worldwide have a copy.

Couldn't find the book, PDF, or audiobook free or cheap. Just found the movie. Because I never saw it, it should be interesting.

Not sure how to upload it, but I would love to give others a chance to read it if I can. I thought about the place with the sailing ship but that would be getting into uncharted waters

That would be cool. How big is it? Is it a single PDF, or broken down into several parts? Can you make it smaller in a zip file? If it's not huge, you may be able to email it to me in an attachment, & I can put it on one of our servers for "members only" to view.

Or I can set up a temporary "collaborator" account & link on my Google Drive for you to upload it to. If you already have a cloud service, most of them will let you get a link to a file stored on it to share with others. You can just upload it to your cloud, send me the shareable link, & just delete it if you like after I download it.

If you have a google, hotmail, live.com, or microsoft account, you already have a free 3-15gb cloud account, but may not know it. Other cloud services offer at least 3gb free.

I'm paying for a google drive media cloud service to serve most media in our private viewing area. But before that, I used their free 15gb cloud service. It was a great deal for sharing a few big files with a handful or family or friends. I didn't install any cloud drive software on my machines. I visit the cloud sites I tested or used directly with my browser, & uploaded or downloaded files directly with a browser... not with any software offered.

Although I had a google adsense account for well over a decade, they did insist I get a gmail mail address to use Google drive. It took 2 minutes to sign up for a gmail address. That's because the 15gb cloud is linked to the mail for up to 15gb of storage for your mail as well as for other stuff.

Back then, it insisted that I had to install their google drive software too, to get google drive. But after I installed it, & got google drive, I just uninstalled all google software, & deleted anything google on the machine. I saved the web link & login to get to my google drive on any browser.

I had a hotmail account for 2 decades, so already had 3 gb of cloud space included with it from microsoft too.

I also have pcloud from Sweden with 5gb of free space if you want to keep your files away from the NSA, CIA, RIAA, MPAA, or other authorities & governments. They are internationally highly recommended.

Do not use cloud drives to share a lot of files or large files with a lot of people. They are not full web servers or media servers. They're meant to share a handful of stuff with just a few at a time. If you're sharing a lot of the stuff on a cloud with a lot of people, they'll cut you off, or limit usage of the account.

Beware it is illegal to publicly share copyrighted material without the owner's permission. Almost all around the world there are "fair use" or similar rules that allow you to share some of your files, music, or video with family or friends, but to publicly share copyrighted material is illegal almost everywhere.

Essentially, if the authorities, government, & copyright holder cannot access, view, & hear the file you shared, you are not publicly sharing it, & cannot be accused of it. If it's non-public, it's a private file. If it's private, where you are not intentionally making it available to the public, & not charging for it. There is no copyright violation.

Thanks Betty, it's just a single pdf file, from a scanned book by the look at it. The pdf is 24.9mb, and I only managed to get it down to 24.8 with 7 zip.

So how do I get it to you? I have it on my Google cloud and have a link for it. Am I allowed to drop links on this page, or is there an address I am to send it to?

You'll probably eventually get too many hits on it & get your account at least temporarily shut down by posting a public link to your cloud drive here. Plus if it's copyrighted, you shouldn't make it public or you may get in trouble.

You can private message me here with the link (just click on my name & select to send me a message), or email me the link to betty "at" buffalobetties.com (that's with no spaces in the address, & use the "at sign" where "at" is.).

Then I can posted in our private members only areas if I can't get permission to post it publicly. But it may take me a while because I may convert & compress the PDF pages to text or JPG pages to save on space & bandwidth.

Also a lot of people don't like using adobe products, including PDF & their reader because their software tends to be buggy or unsafe & unsecure.

Yes, I know what you mean about adobe! I messaged you the link: let me know if you have trouble with it because I'm a bit of technical airhead bimbo when it comes to stuff like this!

Thank you so much.

I got the PDF. Since it was a photo copy of paper pages of a book, I've converted the 25 mb PDF into smaller jpg format pages, so I was able to get it down to 6.3mb. I also converted it into a .txt document of only 500kb. But the .txt conversion shows a few punctuation errors, like quotation marks are now asterisks, & the paragraph breaks were lost, so there are some manual tweaks & fixing to do in every paragraph before I could get a practical, easily readable .txt document out of it.

The PDF to jpg conversion looks good enough at only 24-35kb per page/jpg. I may consider posting those soon in our private section (down by our movies & TV section) for members only. Maybe I'll post about 40 pages of it at a time there every week or 2.

I bought the book in Honolulu back in early 1970. I think I read it five or six times while there. Since that time I have probably read it an additional 50-60 times. I was surprised back about 1985 to find out that the movie was available through Blockbuster. The movie has many differences as compared to the movie. I like both versions of the story and have probably watched my version of the movie on my old VHS tape upwards of probably 100 or more times.

We have the "public" royalty free version of the movie here. I cleaned up the video a bit, so it's much better than most of the VHS versions that were around.

As usual for many of these, the opening & closing credits were cut to avoid phoney copyfraud claims against the movie (people claiming false ownership, copyrights, royalties, or fees for media they really have no rights to). Without the correct title, date, & original copyright info right on the film, most of them claiming false rights to it can't even guess the correct title, year, & original copyrights.

If they can't site the correct title, year, & original copyrights, they simply don't have a case in any court, or even on youtube. If they have rights or ownership of the media, they should know the title & year of it.

That's why you see a lot of media posted by private or independent posters, with no credits or credits removed. The credits make it to easier for the frauds to make false ownership claims & demand royalties from it, or create a fake or illegitimate copyright for it, if all the info about the media is right there for them to read.

I've added the book to our private viewing area in the TV section.
