Here's a question: transsexuals and crossdressers are one thing, but drag queens -- with their overdone makeup, flamboyant costumes, exaggerated "endowments," etc. -- seem to me to be a caricature of femininity, the gender equivalent of white men in blackface. Am I the only one who thinks this way?
-
Robyn I would have to agree with you I have never liked watching these shows I always feel as thought they are to use an Australian expression (They are taking the piss out of us).
Luv Jeangurl :) :-[
-
Hey Robyn Jodie and jeangurl, I guess I feel the same way, sort of like they are mocking us or real girls even though I know it is for entertainment purposes. I am familiar with the Australian /UK term "taking the piss" but they don't try to pass as everyday girls like we would if we could.

A while ago I saw a meme that said:
A guy wearing a dress is fine.
A guy wearing a dress as a joke is disrespectful to transgendered people (actually they used the hideous non-word "transmisogynistic").
A guy wearing makeup is fine.
A guy wearing makeup as a joke is disrespectful to transgendered people.
A guy acting feminine or a girl acting masculine is fine.
A guy acting feminine or a girl acting masculine as a joke is disrespectful to transgendered people.
I tend very much to agree.

I see where you're coming from but I have to admit it doesn't upset me at all.
Miming to some pop song doesn't impress me, I just find it boring and pointless.
However if the "artiste" is doing a standup routine and his/her material is OK then I might pay for a ticket.
My first exposure to crossdressing came at a pantomime as a 7yo (shortly after discovering my mother's underwear and nightdresses!
If ever you are in the UK around christmas time I reccomend you check one out

Hey patricialacey, I remember my first Christmas panto also at aged 7 when mom took my sister and I to the theater she worked in. We were disappointed on coming to Canada, that there were no Christmas pantos in our town or anywhere near by. There are several now in Toronto and Cambridge every Christmas and for awhile it was a tradition for us. A gentleman named Ross Petty whom I met while volunteering at the National Ballet, always produces them and plays the female roles along with some of his friends and they are wonderful.
-
Sorry if I offend anyone, but in my opinion drag queens, with their overdone makeup and overly sexy outfits, are caricatures of women -- the gender equivalent of white men in blackface.

Hey Robyn Jodie you have not offended me nor I would guess anyone one this site.
Everyone has their own sensibilities and should be respected as their own person.
The only people I have a problem with are those feminazis (and whatever the male equivalent is)
who scream that heterosexual trans people have no place in the lgbtq community.
If you dig deeper you can discover that many factions exist that all seem to have their own agendas.
All this squabbling is damaging the lgbtq groups involved when we get enough crap from the self righteous so called "straight" community!
-
I saw the "Three Young Brothers in Drag" photo and laughed: those boys weren't wearing "girl's clothes," the were wearing "baby clothes." In the 1890s both boys and girls routinely wore dresses, at least till they were out of diapers, and often (especially in wealthier families) till they started school -- First Grade, no kindergartens back then.
It was only in the early 20th Century that people got the bee in their bonnet that feminine-looking clothes as a very young child might "damage a boy's psyche" and started dressing boys in pants from the get-go -- even with a snap crotch a pain when it comes to diaper changing.
Dresses for baby boys continued in some families at least till the 1940s. I'm not sure whether I still have it packed away somewhere or my ex kept it when we divorced, but my mother saved one of the baby dresses she made for me; it was pink ("blue for boys / pink for girls" didn't really get started till the 1950s although people today seem to think it is a law of nature), elaborately embroidered, and had scalloped short sleeves.
-
Hi Robyn Jodie, I remember mom showing my sister and I the pink Christening dress and bonnet we both wore. She was giving it to her sister for their son to wear and told my aunt to pass it on as we were moving to Canada in the next year or two. I remember wishing we could keep it for our dolls as it was so pretty.
-
Christening gowns are interesting. Frequently they are very long. I once heard that one reason for its excessive length was the result of high infant mortality: it expressed a sort of wish, or perhaps a prayer, that the child would grow tall enough to wear something as long as the gown.
-
Hey Robin Jodie, I have not heard that before, about the length of the gowns. Ours was not too long and was made by one of my mothers sisters and my grandmother embroidered roses around the collar and the cuffs. Of course at the time they did not know I would be a boy, at least physically anyway but my sister and I shared clothes for a few years for economical reasons. My grandmother rented the same house in Manchester since before the war, only moving out for awhile after a bomb landed a few houses away and shifted the roof on hers which required a repair. She was there until the middle 70's and after passing away my mothers two sisters still lived there until their deaths in the early 80's. Each time I visited there I slept in my grandmothers room where I was born in 1949 and visited the same park I played in as a child. The park was opened in the 1800's and had a Victorian conservatory Tea Shop and Ice Cream Parlour that was still there in the late 70's when I last visited.

Hi,
When I saw this I assumed he was the understudy to Brandon De Wilde since I was unfamiliar with him as an actor. I checked IBDB and he only had one listing and that was as understudy to DeWilde for Mrs. McThing. Upon a little more Googling I found that he played John Henry in the touring company with Ethel Waters but Frankie was played by Betty Lou Holland not Julie Harris. Then I found this old article in the Bridgeport Sunday Post which says that he did understudy Brandon DeWilde when DeWilde left for Mrs. McThing but I think the reporter got his facts confused.

I remember seeing that auction and thinking "Handsome boy, beautiful dress."
It's funny how both boys and girls used to wear dresses at least till they were out of diapers and often, in middle class and wealthy families, till they started school. Then clothing manufacturers started seeing $$$-signs in making it "uncool" to put young boys in dresses, abetted by the psychologists and psychiatrists who were claiming it would damage a boy's psyche to have to wear the same clothes as his sister. Given what psychologists are now saying, and the fact that (at least in the UK) many schools are making skirts for boys an option, we may well have come full circle -- although the option is intended mainly for the transgendered. However, from what I've read, some of the schools are still banning shorts, saying, "If you want to wear something cooler than your long pants, wear a skirt."
-
Wish my school back in the 50's and 60's had given me the option, I would have been in a skirt every day. Not sure if mom and dad would have let that happen but dad went to work early and mom might have given in if I persisted.
-
Hi,
This is one page in Buster Brown's Fun and Nonsense and at first I thought it was one I've seen before, Buster Brown Puts on Girls Clothes, but this one is different. In that one he and the little girl switch clothes while in this one his mother has dressed him as a girl to keep him from going out. Also it's a much prettier dress. Luckily Buster doesn't mind being dressed as a girl and as in the other strip he convinces all the kids to switch clothes.

Well, I was correct about the strip being different but when I just went to save it I also see I've saved it before, several times, once in French. So much for memory.

Giving boys an option of wearing a skirt to school is a great idea. It would also make other daily tasks easier for the faculty . . .

Hi Betty,
I thought it might be a girl but it looks to be a staged photo and the clothes the kid is wearing are too big, more like hand-me-downs. And I've seen the kerchief used to hide short hair in other pictures. And I don't think a little girl would hold the baby doll like that, it looks like it was the final touch before the picture. But I agree that without identification there's no way of knowing.

Hi,
Here's another picture of the same kid and I still think it may be a boy. An unsmiling boy which could be because of his outfit.

Just about everybody who lived through the depression or had parents who lived through it had to wear "hand me downs" that probably didn't fit well.
It was just a way of life... you just never threw anything out or wasted anything. Once upon a time they had to, to survive. But they never grew out of the habit when it wasn't necessary anymore.
I had 4 brothers older than me, plus my little sister was close to my size. So I literally didn't have any clothes or shoes of my own (yeah, all my shoes hurt too). Mom had a sewing machine, so the clothes were forever repaired or patched. The oldest kids got the new cool clothes while the youngest looked like third world refugees. My little sister got some new clothes, but also wore-hand-me-downs from my brothers & some cousins.
It helped pay for their summer country cabin, & a new station wagon every 3 years, while we walked around miserable & embarrassed in 10-20 year old clothes.
It's no wonder I grew up hating my boy-clothes. They were F'n terrible.
We had no bicycle newer than the early 1950s until 1969 when I bought a used one myself by saving up doing odd jobs. We had to maintain the old 1950s bikes ourselves out of junkyard & garbage-picked parts.
-
Yes Betty, that was the way it was back then when you had siblings. The clothing was always hand me downs. We lived in the U.K. in the early 50's ( I was born in 49 and my sister in 1950) we share some clothes that she could wear like my baby clothes and shoe's/ sandals. We wore Mary Jane style shoes back then which maybe why I love that style so much and the sandals that you see the Royal family children wearing even today.
After the nappy stage my sister and I wore the same knickers, plain white flannel cotton ones and under vests. After the war we lived with my grandmother and my moms two sisters until dad came home from Singapore and he was often out looking for work during the day.
I look at photo's today of myself and my sister and our friends ( all girls ) and I can see why I played dress up quite a lot back then. Even after we arrived in Canada in 57 I would still play dress up with my sister and her friends with mom's things and some of the other girls clothes.
We sure did not have much back in the 50's and dad was often looking for work here also as many of his first jobs were seasonal until the early 60's. Like you, we had to keep what we had in good condition and my sister and I were in awe of some of the kids on our block who got amazing toys for Christmas. We always looked forward to getting a Christmas letter from our grandmother and aunts in England with a few pounds in for a gift.
It was not until I was in my teens that I learned my parents were sending them money every month if they could to help support them as their jobs and grandma's pension were never enough for them to get by.
They lived in the same rented two story house where I was born and my mother was raised owned by a doctor who lived next door and he never raised the rent much knowing they could not afford it.
The family and friends of my parents who also came to Canada at the same time eventually got better jobs and bought houses but we still exchanged hand me down clothes into the late 60's because that was how we got ahead in those days.
-
Angela, so you lived in the uk till you were 7 years old, before going to Canada. IF you had a chance would you have preferred staying in the uk or is Canada allot better. Many years ago when i was young and finding many years later that my parents would buy for the children and not for themselves.
-
Hey samantha1, I have often wondered how life would have been for us if we had stayed in the U.K. and pretty much gauge my answer by the lifestyles my cousins had. The boys seem to go into the Trades like my dad and most of the girls became housewives after some work in the early years. I have one girl cousin who did quite well in the education field and retired a few years ago. She and her family visited us two years ago and we still keep in touch now via facebook or email. Another boy cousin went to the best schools and recently retired from the education field as well but after running his own company in Australia, he is very wealthy. Some of the others did OK but I am not sure if I would have done so well in the English school system. My family and myself have been fortunate to always be employed in jobs we enjoyed and provided good incomes as well. I also ran a small business on the side with a good friend so we got to travel quite a bit, having at least two vacations a year. Compared to others I have been blessed so I don't complain much about my health issues for the last ten years, I just try to make the best of things. No matter how much money or good health we have we all end up in the same place in the end so I take one day at a time as they say.

That photo of the boy in a dress surrounded by girls was a wonderful find, Andy. I wonder what circumstances led to what we saw. From his smirk, the boy appeared to be enjoying himself!
-
To me the intriguing question is whether it is really a boy in a dress or merely a short haired girl....and if it really is a boy, what the backstory of the photo might be.
-
Thanks. I saved & tried to enhance these.
-
My take on this, or fantasy I guess, is it's a family get together and someone thought it would be nice to take a picture of all the cousins. As he is the only boy he decided it would be fun to wear one of his cousin's dresses as a joke. The smirk on his face tells me he is enjoying it immensely. The girls all seem to be wearing more dressy dresses while his is fairly utilitarian.
Andy G.
-
Hey andyg0404,
I think you may be right as the girls look delighted they got him in a dress and he does look to be enjoying himself. They would all play nice together but if there was another boy present he would be teased I think.

There's been no toilet paper or towels in my stores since the weekend but I live alone and shouldn't have to worry about it. Chicken and meat supplies have been erratic but I managed to get a two week supply one day this morning. But this is definitely a long-term event. Hope everyone is making out OK.

For the last 20 years of my working career, I watched very little television and saw almost no movies. When I retired five years ago, I decided to catch up and I’ve watched at least one movie pretty much every day since. Worked my way through much of TCM and subsequently started catching up on more contemporary films. I just watched Kinky Boot which I’m guessing most board members have seen. It was charming, a lot of fun and the songs belted out by Chiwetel Ejiofor were great. It was not given great reviews and I think that’s a shame as it was very enjoyable.

Andy, Kinky Boots is an excellent film based on a true story. I have family that live close to Northampton which is where it is based. It was, back in the day the shoe making capital of the UK. Sadly mostly gone now.

Hi,
When I went to post this, there was no reply button which indicated I wasn't logged in. When I went to log in my password wasn't recognized so I reset it and here I am. Must have been a glitch of some kind.
Anyway I just saw this on the auction site. We can never be certain about photos like this, but it certainly looks like a boy's haircut.

That link did not work for me, but thank you for all your contributions to this site.

Apparently all my posts on the story site have no credibility here LOL. I guess I am just a newbie again!

I recently watched the movie Fighting with My Family on Tubi. It's based on a family of wrestlers, mother, father, brother and sister. At the beginning of the film the siblings are kids and the family is trying to convince the sister to wrestle in a girl's match. She is reluctant so her brother offers to dress up so she can wrestle him and he can help her in the match. It's a nice scene and it's a fun movie. I recommend it. Tubi is free with commercials. I tried to do a screen capture, but there is something in Tubi's code which prevents it. This is a link to IMDB with two photos to give you an idea of what the scene looks like. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6513120/mediaindex/?relatedNames=nm8992589

Hey Andy, I liked that one, thanks. Judging by the smile, I'm guessing he preferred the dress to the ?pants outfit ;-)
