Title: VPN's
Post by: francene on November 15, 2021, 05:36:48 PM
Betty:
Quite a while back I employed a VPN that blocked me from this site.  I would like to use a VPN again if I can. Do you recommend any particular brand?
Thanks a lot:
Francene

Sorry for the delay, but this is actually a difficult question to answer.

VPNs are a waste of money for most people, because they won't do what you think they do, most won't do what they advertise they do, most are rather risky to use, & they slow down your connection.

A good VPN will be handy for watching video that blocks viewing from your country (there's other ways around that), illegal file sharing (there's other ways around that too), hacking, spamming, or scamming. So unless you need to do those activities, you have no need for a VPN. Most are not on a good VPN, because good VPNs are rare & don't exist very long before someone shuts them down.

It will take me a while to come up with a list of which VPNs get banned the most often from here, or get internationally blacklisted a lot.

Because the bad guys like to use VPNs, proxies, botnets, & TOR browsers, if my sites or servers get an attack from them, the ISP ID ranges they used in the attack gets banned... even if it's a VPN's ISP.

Betty here's what happened to me.  I go to Breitbart news a lot. Part way down the first column there was an add that challenged you to get 7 out of 10 questions correct.  Like a fool, I clicked on it.  Immediately my PC was locked up (according to them) by the windows 10 security feature. It was a warning page with an 800 phone number at the bottom to call to release the lockup.  The voice on the other end spoke broken English and wanted $10.00 to release the lockup.  He also said he had my IP address. I knew I was had and just told him to shove it up his F-ing ass and I hung up.  I shut off my computer for about 2 hours.  Things seem back to normal but I am concerned they may have my IP address.  I thought a VPN would protect me.  What do you think?
