Title: Fauntleroy, Kodona, Ouji, boystyle, & paige boy gallery
Post by: Betty on January 26, 2014, 08:54:00 PM
We used to call frilly, fancy, or silky boy outfits (no dresses) "Lord Fauntleroy", Fauntleroy, or Paige Boy outfits in sissy communities. In the 21st century it's an offshoot of the Lolita trend, & is called Kodona, Ouji, or Harajuku... Japanese terms. More recently it's being redefined in English terms as, aristocrat, prince, boystyle, anime boy, pirate, cosplay, or boy victorian. But it's more common to still use the Japanese terms, with the Kodona term being the most popular.

In the old days it was simpler. We just called it Fauntleroy, instead of thinking up almost 10 different names for the same thing... It's a frilly sissy in pants or bloomers instead of a dress.

Anywho, they're starting to mass produce these Kodona, or Fauntleroy outfits too, for guys & girls.

I love all the frilly blouses & bloomer-like pants of the new styles. But I don't like the new styles where they cover it up with boyish or man-ish looking vests, suits, or overcoats. Also those that look like a parade band uniform, pirate, or nurse are yucky.

I wish they'd come out in a wider variety of colors too rather than just mostly black, very dark colors. I see a few of them in whites, & some plaids, but not many.

A disturbing trend is wearing their kodona or  lolita outfit with bandages or fake blood spattered all over. Unless it's Halloween or they're going to a premiere of a horror movie, they really need to seek therapy if they think blood or bandages looks cool & should be a fashion accessory.

Also what's with the top hats I see with those Kodona styles these days? These styles were never originally worn with a top hat. The top hat was only worn by business men or for formal adult male wear, not for these type of outfits. Then some have adopted the teeny tiny top hats. That just looks goofier. They aren't supposed to be worn with prince, boystyle, kodona, lolita, or Fauntleroy styles. The top hat is macho attire for adult macho males. It doesn't belong with this stuff.

If you liked those you'll love the next ones I have coming up... The original Fauntleroy & paige boy outfits of years ago.

Here's just a few of the original old styles that I've finished processing, re-sizing, & compressing to post. I'll be posting many more later... maybe before the weekend is over.

I had the misfortune to be dressed up in a page boy outfit for a wedding when I was six. Just old enough not to be too impressed with wearing  pale blue crushed velvet and lace. I have spent the last forty odd years tracking down and destroying the photographs otherwise I would have gladly shared my humiliation with you all!

I was stunning. Unfortunately, embarrassing childhood photographs remain so whatever diverse course your life takes afterwards.
Now if I had such a costume that fitted and looked so cute today............

Yeah. We used to have a kindergarten teacher who punished boys by putting them in thick diapers with large puffy plastic pants... Usually with a frilly girl's top, & ruffled socks, pacifier (dummy), & rattle too. This punishment wasn't just for the kids in her class either. She was famous in the school for it. So the older kids got sent to her class to get punished that way.

She made them stand high above everyone on a table that way. Right across from the door so everyone passing the class from the hall could see them. Kids were made to stand that way for about an hour to all day. I think some of the other teachers enjoyed doing it to the kids, because lots of teachers would peek in to look at, & laugh at the diaper punishment.

I was a good boy I guess because I was never punished that way, but it terrified the hell out of me back then. It would have been fun for me now though.

Anywho, I have some more pictures ready to post, & more to come later.

And they all had long curly hair. Short hair, esp. very short hair & shaven heads on males is a relatively new phenomena. Except that the Romans cut their hair short, but was pretty long compared to modern American standards of today. Cutting hair very short, & shaven heads was reserved for the military, slaves, & prisoners so they could be easily identified if they escaped or went AWOL. It was also reserved for punishment & humiliation.

Even as late as the 1970s very short or shaved heads got poked fun of as that "just got out of prison" or "boot camp" look. But today's city youth worship criminals who did prison time as heroes. That's where the baggy, droopy pants & clothes styles came from too... prison clothes that didn't fit. You're not cool anymore unless you look & act like you did serious prison time these days.

If you're not big, mean, ugly (or a criminal & dumb), they'll call you a sissy.

Betty,

I never understood the whole look of the kids who wear their pants falling down showing their underwear until someone explained to me that it was the "perp look", that is, as you say, the emulation of the criminals. When you're arrested and put in jail, they take your belt, among other things, and consequently your pants will have a tendency to droop. How and why this is a fashion statement is beyond my ken. Of course my parents didn't understand my long hair either but I don't think any of our outfits were anything like the criminal look.

Those are my kind of outfits, they may be stylish now, but in the old days you were a sissy for dressing in that style.

When the younger guys in the 80's started wearing sweat pants pulled up just below the knee, I thought that maybe the knicker style pants from the 20's would make an appearance.

I loved that style, it will probably come back when I'm way too old to enjoy wearing it.

Let's be honest,  this style of dressing has never been and never will  be "fashionable". It appears that most of the photographic images were taken at the beginning of the 20th century. Even then they represented an idealised view of male childhhood that at best could only have existed in a few wealthy famliys that sadly I was, and still am not party to.
Title: Re: Fauntleroy, Kodona, Ouji, boystyle, & paige boy gallery
Post by: Betty on February 02, 2014, 01:27:09 PM
Well, maybe not mainstream society "fashionable", but the Kodona, Prince, or Boystyle fashion is just about as popular as the Japanese Lolita, & Japanese Gothic styles. Although most popular in Japan & a few other Asian areas, you will see people going out to an event or party in almost any large city in the world wearing that stuff... not just on Halloween.

I haven't seen anybody going out in my town in Kodona or Lolita styles, but they have been sighted in neaby Toronto, & in NY city. You can see people wearing real sissy outfits occasionally there too. I have read about people in my area wearing Kodona & Lolita stuff at home, but much like most sissy & ABDL outfit wearers, they're not going out to an event in them.

Of course I suspect people who like these are probably fans of sissy outfits too. They can wear these styles with less criticism, because they're considered costumes, & offshoots of the cosplay fan base rather than a real sissy outfit.

You can still go to some wedding shops & get a paige boy outfit with a peter pan collar or frilly top with short pants, or bloomer-like pants too. Some of the pix of paige boy outfits here are pix of current stock at some wedding & formal wear shops.

Just like the modern "brolita" (boy lolita) & lolita fashions, it demonstrates there will always be a small portion of society that will always appreciate frillier fashions, & as long as they exist, someone will produce them for those people.

Look at how many sissy & ABDL shops there are online. Lolita, Brolita, Kodona, Boystyle, & Prince are a cheaper alternative, without admitting any sissy feelings or fetishes about it.

It's like most of the cars on the road today are silver, silver grey, black, or white. Blue cars are a minority, but there will always be some people who want a blue car, so although they don't make as many of them, they do produce some blue cars for those who like blue.

Long hair on men may not be fashionable anymore, but if you walk through any town, or turn on the TV, you'll see some men & boys still wearing long hair. It may not be fashionable for mainstream society, but fashionable to a minority.

My hair hangs down all the way down to my nipples. I don't get any criticism about it or get any strange looks. Everybody treats me just like a regular guy. Of course in my town, my face is well known from being in the entertainment industry in the past. I've looked the same for decades. Even if somebody doesn't know me, there's a good chance they've seen me around several times before. So my long hair is practically my trademark. It's how people have always seen & known me. Been wearing my hair long for 45 years.

Interestingly, at a time during & just after the hippie era, when men & boys in long hair was fashionable, is when I got the most criticism about it. Down in the southern states in those days, gangs used to beat up men with long hair, & then forcibly cut their hair. Those same redneck areas are where men with long hair are the most common today. Those rednecks always seem to be 40-50 years behind everybody else.

Now that it's not fashionable anymore, nobody cares about my hair... except a few people threatened to kill me if I ever cut my hair.

I noticed most of the caps of the 1980 Fauntleroy movie going around the internet are poor quality caps of old VHS copies, except for just a few promotional pix put out by the producers of the movie. Many of those VHS caps circulating around are actually copies of the old caps that I originally posted in the mid 1990s.

So here's brand new clearer caps of the 1980 movie.

Enjoy.

OK people. It has come to my attention that when I post a gallery or add to one, about half the people interested in that gallery (and this one) are just visiting the last page of that gallery, just to see the newest stuff, & ignore the previous pages until long after, when they decide to re-visit the thread.

More often than not, when I post a gallery or add to one, I've put up dozens to hundreds of pix within an hour. So if you just visit just the last page of the thread, you've missed much more than half the newest pictures. This latest picture update is on the last 3 pages of this thread... not just on the last page. My galleries, & their updates fill several pages of a thread.

Also if you skip the beginning of the last picture updates, & only go to the end of it, you've missed the best quality, highest resolution pictures. When I start or add to a gallery, most of them are sorted with most of the highest resolution images first. So by skipping to the last page of a gallery without checking for new pix on the previous few pages of a thread, you've missed the good stuff.

This last update is on the last 3 pages, not just the last page of this thread. I had added 78 pictures to this gallery in under an hour. Many of you missed more than half the newest pix & best stuff that I just put up by just visiting just the last page of this gallery.

You're probably assuming you've already seen the previous pages, but you're wrong. For a gallery, & it's updates, I usually put up many pix all at once. So the pages just before the last page also contain new stuff.

Too put it simple, the last bunch of pix that I just put up on this gallery on Feb. 7th, start about just past halfway down page 6 of this thread, continue all the way through page 7, & finish here on page 8. I prep, process, compress, & resize all of them ahead of time, so when they're ready, I put up a shitload of pix on the galleries all at once, within an hour.

If I'm not mistaken, the first picture of the Feb 2 post was an actress playing Little Lord Fauntleroy in a stage production.

Regarding the style, I think it's hard for people today to understand what an impact the book "Little Lord Fauntleroy" had on society.  As one historian of costume put it, "Mothers inflicted on their two-fisted sons of eight, ten, or even older, that sweet hero's pseudo-Stuart getup of curls, lace collar and velvet..."

Yep. There's a few that are of the same girl. She played the role for several years, & even appeared on the book cover or inside several books of the story. But you're mistaken, The first pic of Feb 2 (the boy in blue) is a boy (post 76, Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (71).jpg). It's a cropped image of a recent wedding party. I believe you're referring to post 77, Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (75).jpg, in the next post.

I believe she's also the same girl in Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (87).jpg, Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (94).jpg, Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (96).jpg, Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (49).JPG, Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (8).jpg, Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (16).jpg, & Fauntleroy_Paige_Boy (18).jpg.

Just like Peter Pan, many of the stage productions & films cast a woman or girl in the lead role. I guess some directors & producers just couldn't bring themselves to dress a boy like that... even at a time when it wasn't too uncommon to dress boys in such attire.

There were many Peter Pan & Fauntleroy films made that we never saw, because some of them never gained popularity or they were lost over time. More often than not, a woman or girl played the lead role.

I was cast as an elf in tights (with a funny hat & shoes with bells on them) several times in school plays because I was the smallest kid in school. Nobody ever gave a second thought about it not being proper, or it being wrong to regularly be cast in the role as an elf just because I was born premature & small back then. It was just that every time there was a play with an elf in it, they all voted to have little johnny play the role because he was so tiny & cute. In the 5th grade (skipped the 4th grade & started kindergarten when I was 4) I refused to do it anymore, thus ending my acting career at 8 y/o.

Interestingly by that time I liked to put on tights, but I didn't want to get bullied & beat up about it, so kept it a secret. At 7 I secretly tried on my first dress when nobody was around. It was a pretty red & blue sailor dress with puffed sleeves. I even got to put on matching red tights with it. I almost fell over when I looked in  the mirror because it was beautiful, & I looked so cute in it. At 7, it was the most exciting day of my life up to that time. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I still like red dresses & tights because of that, but I have some white, & pink ones too. As an elf, I wore green. Never did find a cute frilly sailor dress like that first one anywhere... not even something close. Can't even find pictures of one like it. They don't make them like that anymore.

Like Betty I was often chosen to be the girl in school plays as I was at An all Boys School and I was also quite small and probably feminine (or effeminate) in appearance.
The first time I was terrified as I had actually to be kissed by a boy and when the Hall was filled with wolf whistles and cat calls I dreaded the worst post play and at school.
Actually it turned out quite nice a lot of the senior boys started to treat me as a girl and were very nice to me and the younger ones followed suit.
This went on for several Terms then I started to grow and became more boyish in appearance but I had picked up some girlish manners by then which I found difficult to shed.

I forced myself to play Rugby and box which changed me and my behaviour somewhat.

Still nice memories  :-*

Hey Betty,
I was sure these pics were of Ricky Schroeder in the 1980 TV movie Little Lord Fauntleroy with Alec Guiness. I googled it and it looks like the same boy to me am I wrong?

Yep all of the Feb 7th pix are from that film. See down past halfway through page 6 of this thread to see the beginning of the Feb 7th pix.

He's one of the few actors featured in 2 different galleries here. Unlike YCDTOTV which spanned many years of the same show, with many actors, He is featured here in a show & a movie.

The film was produced for TV by the Hallmark channel, but was also distributed to movie theaters in Europe in several languages, before it was shown on European TV. That's why a very clear widescreen version of it exists. It was produced with the intention of being shown in theaters as well as TV. It was produced on a small TV studio budget by a small cable channel rather than a big movie budget, so wasn't exactly an award winner. But it did much better & became more popular than the channel ever expected.

Not exactly the frilliest, prettiest Fauntleroy or old style I've seen, but is made cuter with his long blond paige boy hairstyle. Also to his credit, didn't he do a better acting job than you've seen others play the Fauntleroy role? I thought his acting in the film was very convincing & natural... amazing acting for a kid that age.

Although he was a known child actor before this film, this is the one that made him real famous. Many say it was his best performance of his career. Although he performed well in other films, the other films were poorly written or directed, so didn't get as popular. He won a Golden Globe award  for the film he was in just the year before, The Champ, but got more public recognition for his Lord Fauntleroy role.

Seriously, even the TV show "Silver Spoons" was a pretty crappy show... even for a 1980s show. But it wasn't Ricky's fault, it was the writers & producer's fault for putting out such garbage.

He continues to act, direct, & write for films & TV shows today. He's been married for over a couple decades now with 4 children.

You're right -- I meant the first on on "reply #77".  I didn't see that there was an earlier Feb 2 post.

Regarding the use of women for Peter Pan and Little Lord Fauntleroy, I had always understood that the reason was that directors preferred older children or small adults in such roles due to their greater consistency, not to mention child labor laws (which, however, were much more lax back then).  And of course once a boy's voice changes he has a much harder time playing a child no matter how "undersized" he may be.

So someone who was "small for his/her age" stood a much better chance of being cast as a younger child than a child who was "big for his/her age" had of being cast as an older child or an adult.

Of course in an interesting turnabout, back in Shakespeare's time, most female roles were played by boys -- the theater was considered no place for a female.

I remember seeing "The Champ" but I can't ever remember seeing the "Lord Fauntleroy" movie and I didn't even watch much of Silver Spoons until the youtube videos. I don't really watch much TV just prefering movies when I have the time. I do love the wardrobe in the movie and his choice of dress in Silver Spoons too.

Angela, Ricky's version of Lord Fauntleroy was a ''made for TV'' movie that aired in the U.S. back in 1980.  Ricky would have been 9 or 10 at the time of the filming.  Unfortunately, I don't believe it was ever released on DVD, only on tape, which makes it quite difficult to find.

According to IMDB ''Reportedly, the film was the first time that the title role of "Little Lord Fauntleroy", a character who is an American boy, had been played by an experienced boy actor with an authentic American background.''  He also had shoulder-length hair at the time which gave him the appropriate ''look'' for the role... which may be another reason girls have been so often cast in the role.

Actually it was a UK produced film by the Hallmark cable channel, for release in European theaters, & USA release on cable TV's Hallmark channel. It showed in UK theaters first, then a few months later in the USA on the cable Hallmark channel. So it was filmed in a full theater 16:9 aspect ratio in full film quality of the day. A German dubbed version of it was released for theaters in Germany in 1982. It's traditionally played on German TV every Christmas time since its release.

They didn't think it would do well in the American box office market, so only released it for the cable TV channel in the USA. It was very successful in European theaters. Within a year they sold rights to the major TV networks to re-run it too.

The DVD has (480p NTSC & 525p PAL) been around since 2002, which is about the time I got my DVD copy. The old vid caps I posted of it here in the mid 1990s was from a VHS version I taped off of cable TV in the early 1980s. The ones I just posted here were from the DVD running at 525p PAL on my computer.

I noticed the price of the DVD has gone up to about the price of the blu-ray version of it. That's because once they produced the blu-ray of it, they stopped producing the DVD. So it will be a rare item soon. So if you don't want to pay $20-$60 per movie for a blu-ray copy, or for your favorite videos, I suggest you get the DVD of it whenever you can find it cheap or they'll be gone except at collector prices once they are released on blu-ray.

Currently DVD & blu-ray versions of that film are going for about $23-$25 in stores.

The blu-ray version of it will play in standard resolutions, 480p, & 525p, & in HDTV at 720p & 1180i.

In a cheat, torrents of the DVD, & blu-ray of it exist in mp4 & MKV formats through your favorite torrent sources. On a slow DSL connection both the 480-525p & 720p versions can be downloaded in under a couple hours. Of course 1180i will take much longer on a slow connection.

I suggest the 720p mp4 torrent of the blu-ray at about 1.8gb in file size. I checked it out, it looks very good. But my DVD PAL version at 525p looks slightly better, probably because less compression was used on a 3.9gb DVD than in the 1.8gb torrent. All versions are in widescreen 16:9 format as long as your player & screen can handle it. I use the VLC player software to play video & audio files... the best video player for a computer in the world.

To play hi-def video files on undersized & or under-powered laptops, & tablets, leave all video enhancements, scaling, & sharpening turned off so you don't have frame dropping, skipping, or player crashes. Under powered computers can't play hi-def videos smoothly... the CPU just can't keep up. So you have to click off those enhancements on small computers.

However, on a good fast computer, those enhancements can make most ordinary DVDs or 480p files look as good as blu-ray, & make 720-1180p look as good as in the theater.

I was lucky that during the fire where I lost everything, most of my DVDs survived. The shelves they were on collapsed onto the floor & were under water from the fireman's hose. After washing & drying them up, almost all of them still play. The CDs did not survive getting wet... the silver backing peeled away on all brands. So the most reliable way to store data for long periods of time & under harsh environments is the DVD.

Thanks Lindsey and Betty for all the info. I do have a habit of wandering video shops looking for odd movies that I have learned about. I like foreign films from film fests that we don't often get to see at the local theater. I remember seeing Cathy Rigby playing the part of Peter Pan on Broadway and thinking that was not fair. I sure would have loved to play the part but then I have loved tights very much since I was a young boy. I joined the theater group in high school so I could wear tights in some productions even though I was terrified of going on stage most times. I also volunteered with the Toronto National Ballet in the late 60's and early 70's so I could be around the costumes, rehersals and even an extra onstage sometimes. Still hooked after all these years.

This looks relatively contemporary...Here's a pageboy costume I'd love to wear, and the boy wearing it looks pretty happy about it too.
