Title: Simon Barlow
Post by: andyg0404 on May 11, 2014, 04:09:09 PM
Hi,

Coronation Street, for those of you who are unfamiliar with it, is a British soap opera which has been on the air since 1960. At the end of last year the show ran an arc about a boy being bullied by two girls. This resulted in his being forced into a dress. This is a blog post that speaks about it.

There are three shows up on Youtube in which the story line is followed.

This is episode one which closes with the character Simon Barlow showing up in pub where his mother works, dressed up and in tears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5ls1mIF5E0

This is episode two which picks up from episode one and closes with one of the girls watching the bullying on her cell phone where they recorded it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84yQYf0jvbQ&src_vid=a5ls1mIF5E0&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_2376776273

And this is episode three. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ5kvUYjjdM&src_vid=84yQYf0jvbQ&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_1917082289

I found the whole thing very disturbing. I’ve never been a fan of petticoat punishment and loathe bullies. Don’t know if it is more prevalent nowadays or just reported on more. I do know the advent of the Internet has certainly made it much more malicious and destructive.

Anyway, just thought I would post this for all to see.

Hey Andy,
I'm a big fan of Corrie. Australia used to be quite a few months behind the UK schedules (but has recently caught up). However I regularly download from pirate bay to keep up to date and saw this story arc a couple of days after it aired in the UK.

I contemplated at the time of doing some caps etc, but thought it would not be in good taste. Bullying is a nasty trait, and I also suffered quite a lot whilst at school. I could feel the burning shame that the young Simon Barlow showed so well when he went after his mother.

That isn't to say I'm critical of posting these links, the more open the better chance of stamping it out, so thanks for that Andy.

Hi Ace,

I agree about the captures. Even though it's fiction, the whole story line made me feel uncomfortable.
