Old user name
« on: December 31, 2016, 09:23:18 AM »
Dear Betty,

I posted stories on your site under the username karenwest232.
Some of the stories I have revised extensively and posted on other sites.

I wish to continue with some of those stories namely Chris's Surprise prize and Chrissies new life as I have posted on other sites. I can't login under the old user name as I don't have access to the email account I used  to post my previous  contributions. It would require extensive revisions.

Is there some way I could get access my old username and thus  to those stories so I may make the changes?

All the best for the new year,

Regards,

SissyBabyKaren

Even without your email, you should still be able to login to yor account with your original name & password. However, once you login into that account, do update the e-mail. If the board or us need to send out a mail notification, & it keeps bouncing back to our servers as undeliverable a few times, the account may get deleted to stop the board or us from sending out undeliverable mail.

That's a good idea for anyone with an outdated e-mail at Betty's too. If for some reason the board or us must send out a mail, & it bounces back to us a undeliverable, they can loose their account.

People are always surprised that for so many years we've been around, that we have only hundreds of members where the competition has tens or hundreds of thousands. Why should I maintain a massive database of thousands members who haven't been here in years, or have used a different login for years, or are dead? So eventually inactive members get removed. About once or twice a year, people who haven't logged into their account for a long time, get sent an e-mail with our current site address in case they lost track of us. If their mail comes back as undeliverable several times, the account gets deleted.

Your old account still shows as valid. So I guess the last time we did that, it didn't bounce back to us. So it stayed up. Or I may have defaulted the account as permanent. Many times, a user with a lot of posts with a lot of hits at Betty's get their account set as permanent, even if they haven't used their account in a long time, to prevent automatic deletion.

Also, if you have a revised version of a story, you can just post it as a revised version -- you just mention at the top of the story before the story or in the topic title, that it's a new version of it. That way the board will have both. The old version will eventually fall down the list until finally it makes it to a section for old or archived stories.

It's probably not a good idea to delete or change the old original version. If stories get lost during a crash, move, transfer, or system update, I may have to  retrieve it from an old database or the web archives site. So a new version may be replaced by the original during recovery. If both versions still exist on the board, the databases & archives will be able to tell the difference between them, & save both versions. If a recovery is necessary, the system & I can actually see there's 2 different versions & know which one was lost or needs to be recovered.

Besides, one of the main attractions of our stories as opposed to others, is many of our versions of the stories were first drafts of the stories, or some of their earliest editions, with many of the original typos, slangs, & language quirks of the times -- 1997 is 20 years ago now. A lot has changed in 20 years. It's fun to see all those changes, quirks,& original writings of the times. Things changed a lot in just the past 10 years.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

My problem is that I don't remember the password from so long ago.
Incidentally I did try to reset the password but got a message saying I should check my email for the link to reset the password. but as I mentioned earlier I don't have access to the old email account. I don't even remember what e-mail account I used previously, let alone the password to that account.

I will be posting my revised versions under my new username with the recommended note that the stories are revised. I recommend the old user name karenwest232 be deleted from your site.

Your old e-mail is karenwest232(at)yahoo.com.

I don't recommend deleting the account. You have 83 posts & 1181 karma points credited to the account. That's a high rating, & makes the account a high priority user. If we have problems, crashes, or are under a lockdown, high rated users may still have access, access our backup site, or can use special features while others may not.

If you can't access your old yahoo mail, I can change the e-mail in your old stories account to your new gmail account. If the gmail account is functioning, I can send you a new password for the old stories account. Once you login to it you can change the password to whatever you like that would be easy for you to remember. Sometimes messages from Betty's wind up in people's spam folder even though I've never spammed. I think some spam filters just dump anything from privately held servers & domains into a spam filter. The filter designers don't understand than many people have their own mail servers & domains. So if you're expecting a mail from us, always check your spam filters if you don't see it.

I have my own mail servers & domains, just like Clinton. It's safer & more secure if I have total control of my mail system & server.

But don't not try to change or ask for a new password from the automated system there until after you logged into the old account with the new password I just sent you.

You're better off with your reputable, good-standing account you had for years, than starting over with a new one. Especially if you plan on posting more stories, many people use the google search or our own board search to search by the author rather just by the title or topic. So you attract more readers & "hits" with the account you had for a long time than with a new one.

Many people don't arrive to Betty's at our front page. They saved a link to their favorite section, or arrive at a specific spot or topic by their google search. If they search by your old name, they'll get only your old stuff, & not find your new stuff. Even if we delete your old stuff, they'll still find it archived somewhere by searching for your old name. Better that they find it at Betty's than an incomplete archive site, back-up site, or some Russian clone site designed to give them a virus or spyware.

I just tried to access my old karenwest232(at)yahoo.com account. Yahoo says they don't recognise the account.

As offered please change my old stories account email to my new gmail account and send the new password.

It will great to contribute new and revised stories to my old username.

THanks for all your assistance and advice.

Done.

Look for an e-mail from me(at)PearlCorona.com with your new password. Make sure your gmail allows mail from pearlcorona.com. If you don't see it, it may have been filtered, & placed in a spam, junk, or trash folder. The big mail & server companies tend to treat mail from privately owned mail servers & domains as spam or trash. They all want you to use your services, not have your own, & try to discourage people who do.
