hi Betty. I live about 3 miles from croydon and this stories been bugging me for some time now
 as it was always assumed a human was responsible.
I kind of hope it is a fox as "nature red in tooth & claw" I can accept a little more calmly

Sounds like a fox. And a fox is one of the few animals that can be as sneaky or cunning as a cat. Plus if you pick a fight with a cat most of them won't back down. They may hide from the vacuum cleaner or a storm, but will bravely (or stupidly) try to take on & fight a full sized bear or alligator.

Unfortunately a hungry fox won't back down either unless the prey is way bigger than them.

Most cats injured or killed outdoors were because they stood their ground & fought, when they could have just ran like hell.

Indeed, one of the first things you must learn when training or disciplining a cat, is to never fight or argue with them or swing at them with your hands, feet, or an object. They won't interpret it as training or discipline, they'll interpret it as an attack, & argument. You'll be viewed as a threat or enemy to fight rather than a friend.
