I suspected there was more to this than meets the eye, so did a little additional research. MLC School is an all-girls school; this activity was done in conjunction with Newington College, which, despite the name is a (boys') high school. The activity, as I suspected, was done in conjunction with the "One Girl" (https://www.onegirl.org.au/) Australian charity's annual "Do It in a Dress" campaign to raise money to enable girls in Sierra Leone to attend school.

So it wasn't just that Australians like having guys wear netball dresses (although that may also be true), it was part of a charitable "Do It in a Dress" fund-raiser.

Thanks for the research Robyn, very comprehensive. Just to clarify, MLC used to be Methodist Ladies' College.
