The last Flickr… for a while anyway.

Hello everybody and welcome back to My Weekly Flickr.

Well, this is the last exhibit I saw before the pandemic erupted. As it will be some time before there are any exhibits open for me to see, I’m afraid the weekly Flickr will have to be put on hiatus. Aside from one week with no Internet when I moved, I’ve posted a weekly Flickr for the last 13 years, July 22nd will be the 14th anniversary. Even when the museums reopen I don’t think there will be nearly as many exhibits as before, the museums will have lost so much money they will be scraping for funds. So even when it returns the Flickr may not occur regularly.  But I will post articles and links showing art as I come across them.

In early March I walked up to Sotheby’s for their American art online auction preview. A decidedly low-key affair, hence taking place online rather than at a physical auction. Ironically, now all their auctions take place online.  Nothing major but nevertheless I found things I admired which I’ll link to below. THOMAS MORAN | A HILLSIDE VILLAGE AT SUNSET – I think this was my favorite; I found the overall effect makes it seem like a lost City in a hidden valley. I like the sun rising out of the orange sky.

FRANCIS AUGUSTUS SILVA | EARLY MOONRISE, CONEY ISLAND – Silva is a Hudson river painter and is described as a, “marine painter of the luminist style of the mid to late 19th century, especially known for his brilliant sunsets with atmospheric effects.” It’s this playing with light that makes him so enjoyable for me.  I love paintings with full moons or burning suns and Silva supplies that in bulk.

FRANCIS AUGUSTUS SILVA | A SUMMER DAY ON THE COAST – This is less luminous than the other one but I love the details and composition; the white peaked tide rolling in, the wrecked boat on the shore, the ships off in the distance, the birds you can barely see flying across the sky, white against the clouds, and the small group of people enjoying the sand and surf.

ALBERT BIERSTADT | MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE – This is one of his small paintings, only 14” x 19”, but it depicts a vast expanse contrasting the gloriously green verdant trees and grass against the snow peaked mountains. The tiny figures with their wagon show the enormity of the scene around them.

STEPHEN SCOTT YOUNG | MORNING CHATTER – Here’s someone new, a very contemporary painter born in 1958. He’s a realist who etches, and also works in watercolors, “that depict everyday life on the east coast of the United States and the Out Islands of The Bahamas. Often painting genre scenes of quotidian life.” I thought this was an exceptionally beautiful depiction of two big old houses on a quiet lane where you have to be careful you don’t run over the local chickens.

EASTMAN JOHNSON | PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST'S SISTERS JUDITH AND HARRIET – Johnson was a 20th Century genre painter noted for his scenes of everyday life. Wikipedia just told me he was a co-founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; something I didn’t know. Many of his works are painted in a sentimental style; I was struck by this charcoal and pastel portrait of his sisters. I like the way the tan paper is used as the basis for the sister’s flesh and the way he captures their dresses.

JOHN SINGER SARGENT | PORTRAIT OF MRS. EDWIN S. WEBSTER – Another charcoal portrait, this one by the incomparable Sargent.

ANDREW WYETH | ELSIE'S HOUSE – It wouldn’t be a proper American art auction without a Wyeth, and I liked this one, another of his old houses.

WILL BARNET | WHITE BALUSTRADES – I’ll close with this double image of a young woman. Barnet was a 20th Century artist who lived to be 101 years old, passing away in 2012. I confess it was the cat that lured me into this painting.

In other art news.

This is an article from Christie’s with beautiful images of gardens. It also has my favorite story about Manet telling Monet that he should let Renoir know that he has no talent as a painter. I don’t know if he ever changed his opinion, but Renoir certainly made his mark despite the criticism. The story is in the first section on Manet and it also conjures up quite an image of the three of them painting side by side.

This is very cool, visiting the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam virtually. You can move around through the galleries and zero in on a painting which when you click on it is enlarged and identified.

Here’s another virtual exhibit that’s worthwhile visiting. As it says in the article most of the paintings are from a private collection so it’s unlikely they will be exhibited on a regular basis. Hi Betty,

As I said, I will post art emails as I come across them, similar to the, "In other art news" portions of the Flickr posts. But to be honest, compiling the Flickrs became a chore and I'm not sorry to take a vacation from it. As you're aware, I also post sissy things from the web and the auction site whenever I find them and I will also continue to do that.

Stay safe, I wish you nothing but the best. I'm hoping things return to normal some day but the normal we knew may not be the normal we get.

Interestingly, I did a search on your profile for the first (on this server anyway) flickr post. It went back to 2013 but for the links only 3 out of 11 were working 

Seems like we're a shrinking group ....

Hi Ace,

Thanks for the kind words. Betty has changed servers a couple of times and the early posts went away. I still have them and, as you say, many of the links are now broken.

These are difficult times for all of us but hopefully we will be able to pull through.

Most of us didn't archive posts as much as stories or pictures.

Flickr & Photobucket suffer from the same thing websites suffer from. We can't keep or save everything forever. Even if we try, the oldest stuff is the most likely to have its data lost, corrupted, or accidentally purged when doing normal maintenace, cleaning up, optimizing, or defregging.

Even defragging or maintenance on a home computer may cause some of your old backups to be lost. Also at websites like Flickr, people delete their own data when closing their accounts with the site, or if they lose their account, the host deletes their data.

Another problem is when new software, programs, & web servers come out over time, they're not compatible with the old data anymore -- like trying to play your vinyl record or a dvd player, or that 1998 TV won't pick up TV stations anymore. That data is still there, but the new software & hardware shows it's blank because it doesn't know what to do with the older data anymore.

Of course the webarchives at wayback have the older stuff. But they didn't do a good job of archiving our main board/pub. They show the boards, & post titles, but when you click on many of the archived post titles, they're blank.

I think when it comes to archiving forums with lots of pictures & links, they probably skip over a lot for bandwidth & storage reasons. Where with stories, all text is automatically deemed as low bandwith & easy to store.

I just visited the oldest flickr post here (from the link above). 8 out of the 11 links still work. But a few you have to sign in to view because they're considered adult content. That could be just someone in a diaper, or too clear a picture of a shirtless male's chest.

The next Flickr post below it though, only had 3 links that still work.
