I used to have a lot of birds. But with 2 cats in the house, it would be too much to keep an eye on everybody all the time. I couldn't see leaving a bird in a cage all day so I used to let them out to fly around, play with, & cuddle. With one cat it was just manageable. Over the years as a bird passed on of old age, I never replaced them. When my only kitty died about a year after the last bird did, I didn't like the place with no pets in it, & discovered 2 cute kittens were available. With an old well domesticated cat in the house, birds would be fine. 2 kittens or young very active cats full of energy it would be impossible to have birds unless I kept them caged up all the time.

I handle, play with, pet, & cuddle my pets often. And the more you do it, the more they want & love it. That's why my cats are as good as a good dog, & some other cats are annoying, stupid, or almost invisible except when they want something.

All my parakeets & love birds spoke fluent English. The doves & pigeons would follow me around the house on foot. All the birds used to love riding on my shoulders when I walked around or sat around. I would keep an old rag on my shoulder so it they pooped, it wouldn't mess up anything.

When they were out, if I yelled "Birdies!" & stuck out my arm, they'd all fly to my arm & shoulders.

I would be an interesting sight the few times all 9 birds & the cat would be gathered together all at the same time to cuddle & get petted. The would walk on a stand on my old cat too when she was laying around. She didn't care. They all love attention. A couple of the parakeets would say "Here Kitty kitty" when they saw the cat walk across the room.

It was about 30 years ago that I had 9 birds. The last surviving bird I had was an affectionate, talkative blue parakeet that died at the age of 17 years old, around 20 years ago. All  the other ones lived to be 14-15 years old. "Blue" & my very old cat at the time were best friends. When "Blue" wasn't sitting on me, he was sitting on or beside the cat. He used to groom her hair, while saying "kitty kitty kitty" or "pretty" the whole time. That was the second-hand tough, who would attack big dogs, & send them running if she accidentally got outside.

I miss birds. But with 2 active young cats in the house, I don't think it would be practical for me.
