Boy or Girl (Dove Self Esteem advert)
« on: January 25, 2018, 06:01:28 PM »
This advert caught my eye billboard on a bus stop about kids self esteem.  Ginger ninja kid, boy or girl?  Probably a girl but made me wonder.

Who knows these days? I see a dent below where an adams apple would be which might be an indicator that she is female. But do I see a slight hit of an adams apple too? I'm not sure, but if it is, that would mean he's a male.

Ambiguity is intentional....

Never underestimate the power of marketing people to be subliminal in their intent or even to push the envelope to the very edge and that's clear here.  They clearly want people, some at least, to see a boy or a tom boy or a girl on the margins.  All over American that question is being asked or argued.

By the way, his name is Carl, a boy, and he works for the ad agency Doubles who also provide celebrity look alike's - kidding...  Great story idea...

Yes Mary Beth, Carl a male model who has not made up his mind yet as to which gender he is to be defined by. Good one Mary Beth, it is a great story line. Will you be writing it ? Perhaps too young to see a defined Adams apple so I am not sure if it is a girl or boy but I am hoping boy who like pretty things.

I see so many boys these days wearing leggings, both young and older boys too or the very tight jeans that could be called Jeggings. I live close to two primary schools and also a high school so I see many kids walking each day and it has become quite a game for me to try and figure out the gender of some children. It is getting harder to do each day as I am sure there are some kids in this area that are girly boys and girls a bit older who I would define as tomboy's. There are even a couple I see in the shops who are Goth with dark nail polish and black clothing and earrings and piercings all over and unless they speak I am not sure of gender. Even after some of them speak I am confused as I see an Adams apple on some to indicate boy but their voices are still quite high, but then again my voice never broke until I was in grade 10 and I still sang soprano solo's in the church choir ( mom insisted).

Hi Betty,
I am lurking a little bit but I have been having some health problems. Been for a series of blood test's and a stress test for my heart but now I am waiting for another appointment for a Nuclear Stress test. On top of that I came down with a whopper of a cold and chest congestion. With the minor breathing problems I am having I can only imagine the problems you are having and how scary it get's sometimes. The other problem that has come up is my long term doctor/friend has also been having health problems so in the past I could call him anytime and get in to see him almost right away but now he is out sick. If things get worse for me I will need to join the masses at the Walk In Clinic. I guess I led a privileged life and did not know it. I have been pretty healthy all my life and never been sick often or for too long and I don't like it very much as I am used to being the caregiver or handling any problems. I can understand you being house bound in your own home where you control your environment even if you have no choice in the matter. I have been hibernating indoors for awhile where I feel safe and warm and have all the things to help me feel better for now. The older I get the more I don't like it and I wish we could pull a Peter Pan out of the hat and get young again.
Anyway thanks for asking about me and I do check in to read Andy's post on Saturday but have not felt like I could write much that anyone would want to read. Perhaps when Spring finally get's here we will both feel a bit better.

Hi Angela,

Sorry to hear about your health problems, getting old only looks good compared to the alternative. And the Winter is a very down time, along with politics it has me fairly depressed as well. I'm sitting here now wondering how bad our current snowstorm is going to be and hoping that actual Spring is on the way now that the calendar has turned.

Be well.

Glad to hear you're still with us Angela, & putting up a good fight. Hopefully things will get better. Perhaps the change of seasons will help. Had a few pretty rough days after some fair days. But by this afternoon I seem to be improving quite a bit again.

I've grown used to being a shut-in now. Back about 7 years ago where I had to stop & sit on somebody's steps every block to catch my breath, I was already becoming a shut-in. Even getting a mild cold would knock me down causing me to be pretty much immobile for a week or so. Some fumes, air pollution, heavy traffic, or a busy intersection could send me desperately gasping for air.

It was like being in prison. But just like people sentenced to life or POWs, they learn to adapt, or die, or commit suicide. Fortunately I have the cats, nice view from a small window of trees & yards, the internet, TV, & music. I've even been able to keep a work at home job doing computer & small appliance stuff to maintain a bare-bones survival & independence too.

For aging, & age related problems, may I suggest 100mg of CoQ10 every 5-6 hours... 300-400mg a day. We don't retain enough of it when we get older, & really need it.  Beet juice or beet juice powder, or spinach powder is a great energy boost. Just don't drink it like crazy or you'll get kidney stones or other problems. Too much of anything is very bad for you. It tastes nasty but you get used to it. I'd have about 5 oz of beet juice with lots of sugar to help the taste.

Beet juice powder & spinach powder have to be mixed in cold things, or just warm things. Heat kills the stuff that helps. I mix beet juice powder or spinach powder in with instant coffee, lots of sugar, a little bit of milk, & some instant chocolate milk, then add cold or warm water. It tastes pretty good once you get used to it. The stuff settles back out, so you have to stir vigorously between sips. Coffee helps my COPD a lot.

The beneficial effects of beet juice or beet juice powder peaks in about 3 hours after ingesting.
The beneficial effects of spinach powder peaks in about 5 hours after ingesting according to actual real medical studies.

Use lots of garlic or garlic powder in your foods, soups, & stews. It helps fight off aging & makes you healthier. Take an aspirin a day. If your stomach isn't too sensitive to it, take a second one before bedtime to prevent artery clots at rest. Clotting & clogging builds up the most when you're just laying around. Use the regular, or small aspirin, not those huge extra strength pills.

I'm getting nice results from the "One A Day" brand of +65 vitamins. I know it doesn't make sense because it actually has less stuff than Centrum & other popular/recommended brands formulated for older people, but it works better. Perhaps this is yet another example of too much of a good thing is worse than not enough. Overloading our old frail bodies with a lot of stuff they can't handle anymore may not be a good thing... even if the label says it's good for you.

I see many sick or elderly make this mistake all the time. Desperately grasping anything that might make them feel a little better, they do too much of it, so it doesn't help, or makes things worse, so they either just load up with even more stuff, or give up using it.

Coffee for instance, helps my COPD more than anything else. I can import any medicine (not the fake stuff) cheaper than I can buy it locally. Medically approved inhalers & medicines did not compare to how well coffee worked. Back when I still had some medical insurance, or was paying doctors, they all said to avoid coffee, or that it would conflict with medicine. Well, they were very wrong.

But there is a catch. I've tried caffeine tablets as a test. It helped a little, but not as much. There may be antioxidants, other alkaloids, & micro nutrients involved with coffee. Others & I also report significantly better results from instant coffee rather than brewed. Perhaps the higher contact point temperature of brewing coffee kills off some of the beneficial ingredients, or maybe it's because you have better control over the dosage with instant. Instant coffee can be warm or cold, not just very hot. With  little milk, sugar, or chocolate, it's an excellent cold summer drink.

Anywho, too much coffee makes things worse. A 12 oz cup more than every 5 or 6 hours didn't help more. Having too much decreased sensitivity to it, so won't help at all later or the next day. If you get a headache when you haven't had any in a while, that's caffeine withdrawal. You need to cut back & use less. And although the caffeine effects are felt 20 minutes after drinking coffee, COPD or other beneficial effects won't happen until about 2 hours later.

Getting back to too much of a good thing... Family, friends, or yourself will try to push a lot of fresh or raw vegetables & fruit on you to help. This is absolutely the worse thing you can do to an old or sick person. Your body, & organs are already in a weakened state. The last thing you need is something that will work it too hard to digest, or something that you may not be able to digest all of or some. Chicken soup may be praised as a cure for all, but it's not because of what's in it, it's because it's easy & quick to digest, causing less stress on your body.

That raw & fresh stuff may also contain bacteria that a young body can cope with but a sick or old body can't. The germs you swallow not only lay in your belly, but in your mouth, throat, & get into your lungs. Washing it, bushing your teeth, or mouthwash won't help. Cook your food whenever possible. Chew it up well too, so you can actually digest some of it without stressing your body too much.

Fresh fruit & veggies is a good idea for young normal bodies, or people overweight. If you're sick or old, it's not a good idea. If you're having a hard time just getting around, coping with things, or just surviving, you don't want to put anything in your body that will cause it or your organs to work overtime unnecessarily harder, not be able to handle it at all, or poop most of it back out. You need nutrition you can actually easily digest & use. When we get older or sick, our bodies, organs, & belly become as weak & delicate as a baby's. We need the adult version of baby food, not fresh or raw fruit & veggies.

EAT YOUR GLUTEN TOO. It's a healthy, essential, & easily digestible protein that we REALLY NEED. About 1% of the population is mildly affected by too much gluten. That's less than affected by nuts, & we don't see everyone giving up nuts or peanut butter, or calling it a bad thing! Cut down on your salt by using another incredibly healthy & harmless protein, MSG as a substitute. Oh, MSG is so bad for you if you read the blogs, or listen to someone having their period when they think they may had some. FACT: Tomatoes are naturally overloaded with MSG, most nuts are naturally overloaded with MSG, cheese is naturally overloaded with MSG, most meat is naturally overloaded with MSG, butter & margarine is overloaded with MSG, & milk has some MSG. If it is as bad for you as they say, why do you still eat the stuff that has loads of it? Asians didn't corner the market on MSG. They just identified it in the food we all eat all the time.

TIP: At least 90% of everything you read from links & shared posts on Facebook or other social media, odd blogs... especially self proclaimed nutrition & health sites is either fake, half-truths, unverified, unconfirmed, & will not hold up to any fact-checks or medical science.

Yes Betty, still on the green side of the grass for now. I am hoping to live as long as my dear old mom (90 yrs.) but some days I wonder if I will make it with so many aches and pains. I have seen you mention CoQ10 before but have never taken it. I do take a Multi Vitamin for over 60's as well as a low dose Aspirin and some extra Calcium as one of my meds for Arthritis can deplete my calcium levels and I have to go for Bone Density tests every two years. I also should abstain from alcohol now so I can't do Winery Tours anymore and have switched to Coffee tastings and try about 2 or 3,  8oz. cups a day. I have found types and brands I like very much so I buy them when I can find them on sale. I am not big on too many fruits and veggies a day but I do eat Beets about once a week and make home made soups or stews about once every two weeks or so using what I find on the clearance shelves at the grocery store. They may not look great but in soup or stew who cares they still taste good and I usually make a 10 quart stock pot so I can freeze them and share with family sometimes even though they don't come around much anymore since mom died. Funny we live within two miles of each other but nobody calls or even emails much. My brother and his wife are career professionals and busy all the time with two teens and my sister is retired and has a husband who is ill. They have no car so I don't see much of them now.
I would love to supply you with my wonderful Chicken Noodle soup but I have not been over the border for a number of years now and actually have no Passport as yet. The last time I was in Buffalo was about 15 years ago at the airport on my way to New York for a weekend business trip.
Anyway Betty, thanks for all the advice and tips and I will keep in touch as I learn more about my tests.
