Boy or Girl: Auction Site
« on: June 20, 2015, 05:35:35 AM »
Found this on the auction site. Each time I look at it I can't decide if it's a boy or girl. To me everything indicates to it being a boy, the short hair, a masculine looking face and arms. The way the shirt is buttoned up, with the buttons on the right as opposed to the left, note the buttoned down collar.

Although the text on the photo says Pattie Ellen Prival, I'm wondering if the subject is indeed male, could that be the name he wishes to be known as when wearing female clothes?

The dress looks 1950s (pre-Beatles), a time when bangs on a boy, especially in the USA, would be extremely rare -- most boys were sporting crew cuts or "Ivy League" (= just long enough to get a part in it) cuts. Also, there seems to be some "fullness" in the front of the shirt which would suggest a girl.  But if you want to think it's a boy, why not?

The hair is most likely pulled back into a pony tail. It most likely is a girl but I too like to think (s)he is a boy. :)

Interesting - very interesting:
Breaking it down top to bottom - - -
Hair - nothing unusual here except it is short and just touches the ears.
Eye brows and lashes noting notable here.
No 5 o'clock shaving shadow.
No visible adam's apple.
Button down collar shirt - could go either way here although it appears to be tightly
button at neck - small neck ?
Button placket placement - again could go either way also.
Chest/Bust -loose folds with pronounced shaping - wearing an "A" or "B" cup bra ?
Sleeve length - now getting into something - long sleeve shirt with
cuffs rolled up to the elbow feminine length and so neat ? One more roll would
put the wearer in the male business office pool.
That's an awful amount of skirt - knee length and yet worn almost at an empire
waist above the natural waist line.
AND then another quirk that BELT - do I detect the male end of the belt fastening
is on the right side ? Male wear - buckle on left and male end fastened thru to the left.
Comment on floral flower print skirt (dress length) - just an awful amount of material.
Enlarging the picture - do I detect hair on the arms or is that just shadows or a grainy
photo ?
Fingers do not show anything to write home about except the left hand fingers seem
to be cupped ?
AND back to that skirt and awful amount of volume ?
What is hiding underneath ? A petticoat ? A waddling bunch of diapers ?
The pegs (LEGS) look normal.
No signs of hosiery - pantyhose.
Footwear not visible

So you can make this into anything you want male - female - bi-sexual - semi crossdresser !
Where is that x-ray scanning device when I need it ?

The hair & clothing could be anywhere from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s depending on the location. But the buildings & structures in the background do tell a lot. They weren't building new homes in cities much those days. New buildings in cities were mostly commercial, industrial, & public buildings.

The buildings are newer & too close together to be rural, so this is a suburban area. From the style & types of structures, the gate, fence, the gutters, & the sidewalk it appears to be early to mid 1960s. It is the style of property for someone with above average income in the suburbs. The hair & clothes are what would have been fashionable in those days. Even in clips of the early Beatles concerts you would see many girls wearing almost this same type of outfit & hair. Above average income people tend to try to be more "fashionable" while the rest of us wore "hand me downs", & our parents cut our hair.

Home air conditioning in those days was bulky, heavy, noisy, inefficient, & frequently broke down. So many even wealthy or suburban families wouldn't use them. The shorter hair was more comfortable in hot climates or during the hot summer. The bugs were a lot thicker in the suburbs & rural areas too. Sweating in long hair attracted bugs more than short hair, & bugs get tangled in long hair, which is a real icky or frightening thing for most girls.

There was also the myth that is still around today that long hair attracts lice & they like it more, so in areas where they heard there was lice going around, the girls had their hair short. It turns out though, head lice don't care how long your hair is. Unless you're gonna shave your head bald down to the skin, lice are just as happy in hair that's only 1/4 inch long as they would be if your hair is 2 feet long.

She looks in her mid-teens, so the photo is probably from the late 50s to early 60s.
