Hi,

For those of you who haven't seen the film, Tommy masquerades as the girl trick rider when she is hurt and spends a good portion of the end of the film in a dress. It's the plot of Toby Tyler which Jackie Coogan made as the silent film, Circus Days. This film unfortunately isn't available. I'd love to see it. Coogan made a darling girl in Boy of Flanders another silent film. I have a lobby card of Jackie in Circus Days with him in his dress and wig. Very cute.

Hi,

Much nicer picture than the one of him covered in mud. And it only just dawned on me that the boy next to him must have been his stunt double. I was thinking to myself, that looks like a boy as well but assumed he was posing with the girl actress from the film but that is definitely not Ann Gillis. Gee, two for the price of one, what a treat.

Hi,

I wrote above about the silent film "Circus Days" with Jackie Coogan which is based on the book Toby Tyler or Ten Weeks with the Circus. During the course of the film Jackie masquerades as the girl trick rider when she is injured, much as I described above in the Tommy Kelly film. This has been a lost film for years but by accident I just came across a 12 minute section of the film and happily, the 12 minutes include scenes of Jackie dressed up. He is adorable. The title cards have been removed and of course there is no sound but it's not hard to follow the plot. The scenes of Jackie dressed up are wonderful but watch the whole clip as he is wonderful no matter how he is dressed. Charlie Chaplin who discovered Coogan and cast him in The Kid recognized him as a natural talent. When Coogan fell on hard times and asked Chaplin for help, he gave him $1000 immediately with no questions asked.  It's ironic that one of the most beautiful children in the movies grew up to play Uncle Fester on the Addams Family. Enjoy.
