Hey Robin Jodie, I have not heard that before, about the length of the gowns. Ours was not too long and was made by one of my mothers sisters and my grandmother embroidered roses around the collar and the cuffs. Of course at the time they did not know I would be a boy, at least physically anyway but my sister and I shared clothes for a few years for economical reasons. My grandmother rented the same house in Manchester since before the war, only moving out for awhile after a bomb landed a few houses away and shifted the roof on hers which required a repair. She was there until the middle 70's and after passing away my mothers two sisters still lived there until their deaths in the early 80's. Each time I visited there I slept in my grandmothers room where I was born in 1949 and visited the same park I played in as a child. The park was opened in the 1800's and had a Victorian conservatory Tea Shop and Ice Cream Parlour that was still there in the late 70's when I last visited.

Hi,

When I saw this I assumed he was the understudy to Brandon De Wilde since I was unfamiliar with him as an actor. I checked IBDB and he only had one listing and that was as understudy to DeWilde for Mrs. McThing. Upon a little more Googling I found that he played John Henry in the touring company with Ethel Waters but Frankie was played by Betty Lou Holland not Julie Harris. Then I found this old article in the Bridgeport Sunday Post which says that he did understudy Brandon DeWilde when DeWilde left for Mrs. McThing but I think the reporter got his facts confused.

I remember seeing that auction and thinking "Handsome boy, beautiful dress."

It's funny how both boys and girls used to wear dresses at least till they were out of diapers and often, in middle class and wealthy families, till they started school.  Then clothing manufacturers started seeing $$$-signs in making it "uncool" to put young boys in dresses, abetted by the psychologists and psychiatrists who were claiming it would damage a boy's psyche to have to wear the same clothes as his sister.  Given what psychologists are now saying, and the fact that (at least in the UK) many schools are making skirts for boys an option, we may well have come full circle -- although the option is intended mainly for the transgendered.  However, from what I've read, some of the schools are still banning shorts, saying, "If you want to wear something cooler than your long pants, wear a skirt."

Wish my school back in the 50's and 60's had given me the option, I would have been in a skirt every day. Not sure if mom and dad would have let that happen but dad went to work early and mom might have given in if I persisted.

Hi,

This is one page in Buster Brown's Fun and Nonsense and at first I thought it was one I've seen before, Buster Brown Puts on Girls Clothes, but this one is different. In that one he and the little girl switch clothes while in this one his mother has dressed him as a girl to keep him from going out. Also it's a much prettier dress. Luckily Buster doesn't mind being dressed as a girl and as in the other strip he convinces all the kids to switch clothes.

Well, I was correct about the strip being different but when I just went to save it I also see I've saved it before, several times, once in French. So much for memory.
